Meet Preview
The leaves are falling off the trees and it’s still hot as balls outside which must mean it’s the beginning of cross country season. This Saturday the UMBC Running Club will be returning to Penn State for the third year in a row to start off a kick @$$ season in the land of the Nittany Lion and make Brian proud.
This year our women’s team is looking to absolutely kick butt this cross-country season. Leading off we have the one and only Anna Staats (...Sr?). That’s right, she’s back baby! Proving once and for all Running Club is the superior running team of UMBC, Staats just couldn’t stay away and is ready to show off her 100-miles-per-week legs and completely take down NIRCA one and for all in her final cross country season. Also looking to score for the Retrievers this year is Kate Miller (Sr.). After spending her summer attempting poor mans altitude training, she has returned this season in much better shape than last year and is just hoping to finally PR during her running club career. She still might not this race, but be warned, if she does she will not stop talking about it for the next three weeks. Next up is Naomi Corns (Jr.). She regularly used wine berries as running fuel over the summer and is ready to use that extra energy to propel her through an amazing season. Following Naomi is none other than Julia Corns (Jr.) (the one who wears glasses) who is ready to see her way to a strong start to the season this race. That’s right folks, you read that correctly, we have 2 Corns actively racing this season. Just one of them is enough to scare any runner, but two will probably lead to an absolute annihilation of the season. Up next, is Alanah Follis (So.) who’s cross country training has been limited, but she chases kids for a living and that’s basically the same thing. Rounding off for the women’s team is our women’s captain Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who finished a mean Lumberjack workout last week and is looking to defend her title as the team’s highest scorer.
On the men’s side, freshman Red Kidane (Fr.) has come onto the team absolutely lighting up every workout and time trial and is ready to confirm his spot as top dog this race. However, not far behind him is Isaac Montgomery (Jr.) who’s out of character competitive nature just might propel him to his longing victory. Either that or Red will have to start sleeping with one eye open. Also high up on the list and looking to score on the men’s side, we have another freshman Joshua Sanchez (Fr.). Josh likes to hunt zombies in his free time so maybe if he takes that experience, and pretends the people behind him are zombies, he will run faster. (Not that he isn’t already super speedy on his own). Up next we have Christopher Blaisdell (Jr.) who had a top notch performance at the UMD Scrimmage and is ready to bring back that action for an extra two miles this Saturday. Behind Christopher, is new member Harry Trinh (So.) who has done nothing but shown up given us solid performances so far this season and is sure to keep up that trend this upcoming race. Up next for the retrievers, is our unanimously elected Supreme Leader Alex Hulburt (Sr.), who we’re just going to wrap in bubble wrap this season to make sure he makes it through without breaking himself. Hulburt has been training diligently this cross country season and is ready to PR and finally make Brian proud. Following is Ryan Kane (Jr.), who is secretly ready to destroy everyone and show them what happens when you don’t come to his summer long runs. Back and ready for another breakout season is Justin Drew (Sr.) who is ready to take down his last cross country season and go out with a bang. Finishing off for the men is Michael Wellen (make your club profile) who already did a 12 miler this season so he should be able to go twice as fast for only going less than half the mileage this race. That’s just solid math.
Temperatures are looking a little higher than comfortable so everyone make sure to hydrate well this week and do your best to start the season off on a high note. Lets go dawgs!

The Race
Meet recap
What was hotter, the weather or the wings? This past weekend the UMBC Running Club made their way up to Happy Valley to compete in their first official race of the season and it was just… painful to say the least.
First off in the women’s race was, you guessed it, Anna Staats (Sr.) who seems to have an addiction to getting 7th place in cross country races. Anna came in hot for the retrievers in a time of 24:36. Next time, she said might try carb loading 5 minutes before the race. Coming in next was Naomi Corns (Jr.) who came in 37th at a time of 27:03. Naomi has claimed at practice that she’s past her peak, but this time is almost two minutes faster than when she ran this race two years ago so this is starting to look like a come back season for this retriever. An even more amazing trick is she ran the whole race twice. Oh wait, no, that was Julia Corns (Jr.) who came in tearing up the field at 27:44, placing 53rd overall and 3rd for the retrievers. Julia claimed to not have ran that much over the summer, so if this is her just getting back into training god help us all after she’s had a few more weeks under her belt. Finishing 65th overall and 4th for UMBC in a time of 28:23 was Kate Miller (Sr.). This time was 4 minutes and 20 seconds faster than last year so she can’t really complain, but she did anyway. She honestly doesn’t know what was more painful, the race or the wings afterwards (the wings). Next up was Alanah Follis (So.) who showed off her naturally raw running talent, and sweated out a 38:16 to come in 112th overall. The real shock of the meet was Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who just barely kept her title as Highest Scorer for the team but lost the title overall in the meet to not one but TWO people. Katelyn came in 113th with a time of 39:25. The race was hot and painful but honestly overall looks like a solid start to the season for the women’s team.
After waiting for the women to finish and feeling the weather get hotter ever minute, the men had nothing but fear. Starting out the gate and finishing in first for the retrievers was freshman prodigy Red Kidane (Fr.) coming in 53rd overall at a time of 30:05. If Red was dying during this race, his face didn’t show it. Not far behind Red was Isaac Montgomery (Jr.) who came in close after at 30:44 placing 64th overall. Isaac celebrated his second place spot by eating TWO atomic wings. A threshold for pain if I’ve ever seen one. Absolutely firing up the course was Harry Trinh (So.) who seemed to just get faster and faster throughout entire race, coming in at 31:42 placing 83rd. Placing 4th for the retrievers was Josh “Zombie Boy” Sanchez (Fr.) who died in the car ride, right before the race, during the race, after the race, and then later at lunch after eating an atomic wing but kept coming back every time and still crossed that finish line at a hot time of 32:36 and placing 96th overall. Next up for the retrievers was the one and only Alexander Hulburt (Sr.). Alex’s face showed nothing but pure rage throughout the entire race, and we honestly couldn’t tell if he wanted to kill someone or be killed (probably both). He put that rage to good use though and had an ultra fast kick at the end earning him kick of the week and a 5th place spot for the team at a time of 33:51. Following very close after was Christopher Blaisdell (Jr.) running a really good looking race and coming in 117th at 34:02. Next up was Ryan Kane (Jr.) who was probably in constant danger of being murdered by Alex the entire race but thankfully made it to the finish line in 34:57. Michael Wellen (Sr.) came into the race with a goal of finishing in under 45 minutes and ended up breaking 40 minutes with a time of 39:49, placing 147th, so watch out for this retriever’s season because he’s trampling all expectations. Rounding out for the men’s team was Justin Drew (Sr.) easing in at 40:56 and placing 150th overall. Let me tell you folks, if he was tired during this race he didn’t show it all. The men's team managed to come in an impressive place of not last overall.
It was a tough race but it can only get better and easier from here folks, so be sure to keep up with the team and not miss out on an exciting season.
