The UMBC running club opens up their regular season on Saturday at the Terrapin Invitational. Many track workouts and easy runs have left our athletes chomping at the bit to race. Our dawgs are fit and ready to do this.
The first event of the day, the alumni mile, lacks Matt Glessner (Adult.) and is thus not worth watching.
The women’s 5000m features Anna Staats (Fr.) and Nicole Dawson (Gr.). Staats is searching for a new PR after running at least 1000 miles since her last PR. Rumor has it Dawson and Staats are listed at the same seed time so it’s sure to be an exciting race. The men’s race is headlined by Brandon Folio (Sr.) who after training consistently 3 days a week, is trying to break his old high school PR of 16:40 from his glory days.
The women’s 4x800m relay features Julia Ciattei (Jr.), Julia Corns (Fr.), Naomi Corns (Fr.), and Anna Staats (Fr.) which look to utterly demolish the school record of 12:58. The mens team features Drew Bowling (Sr.), Tomas Aker (So.), Alex Hulburt (So.), and Brandon Folio (Sr.). They also look to break the school record of 8:52.
The men’s 100m stars Jason Winkler (Jr.), and Cole Bowden (Fr.). Unfortunately Mike Sack (Jr.) will not be competing after facing extreme levels of grief, losing to Winkler at the scrimmage. Winkler looks to break the 12 second barrier and Bowden is in search for the world record. His seed time is listed as 9.58 so it’s is certainly possible. Stay tuned.
The women’s 1500m spotlights Katelyn Gregory (Jr.), Julia Corns (Fr.), Anna Staats (Fr.), and Nicole Dawson (Gr.). Gregory looks to defend her club record of 7:15 and Corns is searching to make it her own. The real dark horse is Staats...after the 5k and 4x800 will she have enough left to give them some competition? And what about Dawson, she’s got the endurance so her recovery is super human. Plus she’s much older than our other retrievers meaning she has experience on her side. The men’s race features Brandon Folio (Sr.), Jim Leahey (Jr.), Tomas Aker (So.), and Alex Hulburt (So.). Folio, Aker, and Hulburt will all be fatigued which leaves it up to Leahey to lead the retrievers. The catch? None of us know who he is. Come to the race to find out.
The women’s 400m spotlights Julia Ciattei (Jr.). She has high hopes to set the club record. The men’s race features Drew Bowling (Sr.) who will be on the hunt to break his own club record but can the elusive Trent Foster (So.) shake things up? He was only 1 second behind Bowling in the 4x4 at the Towson Scrimmage.
The women’s 3000m steeple features Anna Staats (Fr.) again. Rumor has it she has been conspiring with members of the varsity team for steeple assistance. We here at runningclub HQ hope this is not true folks. The men’s race features Thomas Ryba (Sr.), maybe Jim Leahey (Jr.) and maybe Brandon Folio (Sr.). If any retrievers finish this race it will be a success.
The men’s 4x100m relay features Drew Bowling (Sr.), Cole Bowden (Fr.), Thomas Ryba (Sr.), and an unknown retriever as our #4. It may even be Jim Leahey (Jr.), in which case there would be 2 dimensions of mystery.
mike is in the 800.
Cole Bowden (Fr.) will headline the 200m and looks to perform.
The men’s 4x400m relay features Drew Bowling (Sr.), Trent Foster (So.), Tomas Aker (So.), Alex Hulburt (So.). The urge for a school record is very real and this is definitely the team to do it.
The field events headline Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) who looks to improve upon her record in the shot put and Jason Winkler (Jr.) who looks to hippity hop his way to a new long jump PR and also looks to dethrone Sack’s club record in the shot. He’s also looking to make a clearance in the high jump.
The weather was initially calling for heavy snow but now appears to be mild and cloudy, perfect running weather. Come out to support our dawgs! Stay tuned for results, video, and a recap after the meet. LETS GO DAWGS!

Meet Recap
On Saturday, the UMBC running club traveled to UMD to compete in the Terrapin Invitational. Months of hard work paid off with 11 club records being set!
We first would like to officially apologize for advising you folks not to watch the alumni mile. It turns out that Matt Glessner (Adult.) indeed ran it. Glessner ran hard from the gun and was able to muster a 5:31.69 to place 5th...in Hokas. Thus, we have decided to award Matt with the True Grit performance of the week. Congratulations Matt.
The women’s 5k lived up to expectation with Anna Staats (Fr.) and Nicole Dawson (Gr.) duking it out relentlessly throughout the race. With 1k to go Dawson built a gap, but Staats was able to kick hard to place 5th in a club record time of 19:38.29! Dawson finished closed behind to finish 6th in 19:43.71. Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) also had a superb performance placing 11th in 27:48.76. The men’s 5k showcased an extraordinarily mediocre performance from Brandon Folio (Sr.) who finished 5th in 16:56.68. However, based on the energy he expended the day prior, it’s actually quite impressive.
The women’s 4x800m relay proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day. Leading off was Anna Staats (Fr.). Only 15 minutes after setting a huge 5k PR, she scorched a 2:44.3 to get the team into 2nd. Running next was Naomi Corns (Fr.) who maintained a steady 5 second gap behind UMD. She split 2:46.2 before handing off to Julia Ciattei (Jr.) who closed the gap on UMD and splitting 2:42.3. Only 2 seconds behind UMD, it was up to Julia Corns (Fr.) to pull off the unthinkable. Blistering a 2:41.3, she overtook UMD to win the race in a club record time of 10:54.90! The men’s 4x800m showcased some of the most impressive positive split running we have ever witnessed. Tomas Aker (So.) took it out hard in 57 high to take the lead. Fading to a 2:05.0, Aker handed off to Drew Bowling (Sr.) who took the baton in 2nd. Drew kept the sub 60s rolling with a 59 high first lap before disintegrating to a 2:06.5. The dark horse, Thomas Ryba (Sr.) took it out more sensibly in 62. In the end he suffered a similar fate to Bowling and Aker, but was able to split a 2:12.6. With the club record in sights, could Alex Hulburt (So.) get the job done? The answer, my friends, is yes. Hulbert took the first 200m in an insane 28 before cratering to a 2:14.1. In the end he was able to hold onto 2nd in a club record time of 8:39.45!
The men’s 100m featured Cole Bowden (Fr.) who broke the world record for fastest 100m while dressed for the arctic tundra. The time? 12.20. Not only was this a world record... it was more importantly a club record. Bowden placed a solid 10th.
The women’s 1500m featured Nicole Dawson (Gr.) who showed her true distance ability by running almost the exact same pace as her 5k. She placed 4th in 5:39.98. Close behind, Naomi Corns (Fr.) and Julia Corns (Fr.) finished 5th and 6th in 5:54.39 and 5:59.82 respectively. Props to Naomi for being the alpha corn. Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) rounded off the Retriever’s elite finishing 12th in 7:40.02. The mens 1500m featured Tomas Aker (So.) and Jim Lahey (Sr.) in the first heat. Aker sat in 2nd for most of the race before blistering the final lap to win the heat and place 8th overall in 4:43.41. The real surprise was Lahey, who successfully made the jump from fictional television character to running 4:53.15 for 13th in the 1500m. No man with that level of lung and liver function should be able to run that fast. Lahey was sent to drug testing after the incredible feet. The good news... he’s clean. The bad news... a small amount of beet juice was detected. Brandon Folio (Sr.) headlined the fast heat and ran an extraordinarily slightly less than mediocre 4:36.00 to place 7th.
The women’s 400m featured Julia Ciattei (Jr.) who ran an epic first 250m to finish 2nd in a club record time of 68.88! In the men’s 400m, Drew Bowling (Sr.) lead the retrievers finishing 4th in 54.25. We spoke with Drew after the race. “I’m pretty disappointed in how I ran today,” said Drew. “But as long as my Peruvian fried steak doesn’t take forever to come out tonight then I won’t be too upset.” One of the most impressive performances of the day was Trent Foster (So.) who Van Niekerked the last 200m, holding on for the win from the outside lane. Trent finished 5th in 55.94.
The women’s 3000m steeple showcased the one... the only... Anna Staats (Fr.) who absolutely dominated the field from the gun. Unfortunately, the first lap was botched as the 2nd barrier was set to the mens height. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Staats was the only one in the field who hurdled it, but the investigation is still underway. Staats won convincingly in a club record time of 13:09.49! The men’s race featured Thomas Ryba (Sr.) who surprised everyone by not only finishing, but by being the only athlete of the day to finish 2nd while simultaneously being lapped. He finished 2nd in a club record time of 12:10.03! We didn’t think this day could get more surprising... but it did... Jim Lahey (Sr.) finished an impressive 3rd in 13:25.29. The catch? His feet were dry folks. Either he cleared the water jump every single lap or he’s not a real person. I’ll leave it up to you to decide.
The men’s 4x100m relay featured Jason Winkler (Jr.), Drew Bowling (Sr.), Thomas Ryba (Sr.), and Cole Bowden (Fr.). Strong handoffs and quick zoomzooms lead to a shattering the club record. They placed 3rd in 49.70!
The 800m featured a surprise entry from Brandon Folio (Sr.). Most people run for the joy and intrinsic fulfillment. For Folio, its all about kicking for home over the last lap to obliterate the slow heat in 2:16.98.
The men’s 200m once again featured Cole Bowden (Fr.) who didn’t let the extra 5 pounds of clothing stop him from placing 7th in a club record time of 24.76!
The men’s 4x400m was the race to watch as our athletes faced some stiff competition. Alex Hulburt (So.) gave the Retrievers a massive lead with a 56.0. Trent Foster (So.) kept up the momentum with a 56.7 and Tomas Aker (So.) kept the ball a’rolling with a 55.6. It was all up to Drew Bowling (Sr.) to solidify the win. After a hard-pressed 55.7, the Retrievers were able to secure the victory in a new club record of 3:46.02!
The field events were showcased by Jason Winkler (Jr.) and Katelyn Gregory (Jr.). Winkler fouled in all 4 long jump attempts and supposedly made a height in the high jump. Unfortunately the high jump results were never posted so we’ll never know for sure. Winkler did muster a solid 7.19m in the shot put which was good for 5th. Gregory had a superb throw in the shot with a 7.97m to break her own club record!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support our dawgs. Results, video, and photos are posted above. The UMBC Running Club returns to action at the Retriever Invitational in 2 weeks!
