Meet Preview
The UMBC Retrievers are back after surviving another long and cold Baltimore winter! A few brave souls decided to stay back on campus for the first weekend of spring break and run the world-renowned Penn Relays! On Sunday they'll pile into a couple of vans and make the trek to The University of Pennsylvania's historic Franklin Field that has seen millions of athletes over its history.
Like most meets, the women's team has a better plan for events than the men's team. They're planning to enter the Sprint Medley Relay, Distance Medley Relay, and 4x1600. Leading off for the retrievers in the SMR will be none other than Alanah Follis (Fr.) who after a great cross country season is looking to attack the track. We've never seen Alanah run a 400, but with her dino socks it's bound to be a race to watch. Up next for the retrievers is Julia Ciattei (Sr.) whose only goal this meet is to have 69 in as many of her results as possible. For this leg, we're thinking a speedly 25.69 should do the trick. Next for the retrievers is Anna Ciattei (Sr.). After her deadly kick at Princeton last semester, we know Anna is raring to run a quick 200. Anchoring this race is Anna Staats (So.) who after winning the Lower Potomac River Marathon last Sunday and the Shamrock run 3K on Wednesday, is trying to complete the true distance triple and bring home a strong 800. Because she's a masochist, Anna is also competing in the open mile. Maybe her two fast-twitch muscles will come out of hibernation, but we aren't holding our breath. The retrievers are also entering the DMR with a slighly different team. This time, Kate Miller (Fr?) will lead off for the retrievers in the coveted 1200 meter leg. If she runs anything like she drives, Kate is sure to have a fast leg. Julia, our resident 400 runner, will return to her main event to take the baton after Kate. Can she hit the coveted 69.69 she's been working towards all winter? Next for the retrievers is Alanah, whose plan is to go out hard and finish faster. Anchoring the relay is Anna, the distance one, who figured she didn't run quite enough miles yet. The last event of the day will be the 4x1600 relay, where Kate, Anna (the fast one), Julia, and Anna (the distance one) will face off against teams in the longest relay any of them have ever run. They're looking forward to a fun meet and too open up the season on a high note!
As usual, the men's team has been met with many injuries in the past week and a lot of runners pulling out. Will Staab (Fr.), who is at risk for getting Staab'd if he pulls out of another meet and Tomas "Always Somehow Gets Injured" Aker (So.) are both out this week for injury. That changes a lot of the relays around and at this point no one even knows what the men's team plans on running. One thing is set, however, they're going to give it their all and fight for every last place. On the men's side, Alex "Thunderthighs Team Captain" Hulburt (Jr.) is living out his worst nightmare trying to decide on what relays to enter. It's okay Alex, we don't know either. Tanny Ser (Does he even go here anymore?) is coming out of retirement to lace up the spikes again and run whatever he needs to. He'll be focusing on the sprints this season, so we'll probably see a 4x100 relay on Sunday. Also wanting to wake up their legs from a break is team cutie Cole Bowden (So.). He's been playing a lot of poker lately, but knows the team only needs four good cards for these relays. Trying to earn his title of team cutie back, however, is Trenton Foster (Jr.). After spending all winter playing League of Legends, we can't wait to see what Trent can pull off this meet. In addition to his backwards training regimen, Trent is also running the backwards 400. We aren't really sure if this means you take right turns instead of left or if it means you actually run backwards, but we're excited either way. They'll be joined by Matt Lyan (Fr.) one of two true distance guys making the trek to UPenn. He's running the open mile and we can't wait to watch him try to break 5:00. The other true distance guy coming is none other than Ryan Kane (So.). Rumor has it he's been doing a ton of training these past few weeks and is about to have a breakout season. You heard it here first folks! We can't wait to see what the men have in store this weekend and really just want to figure out what relays they're running.
The weather is looking cool for Sunday, with a temperatures in the 40s and sunshine all day. Come out and watch the retrievers start their spring break on a high note!
