On Saturday, the retrievers will embark with a small team to Lehigh to compete in the most important meet of the season: NIRCA Regionals. As UMBC students, it’s no surprise so many faces are missing from this race, it is midterms season after all.
Anna Staats (So.), for one, has been thinking of Natty’s more than a frat boy at College Park. After PR’ing in every 6K she’s ever run, Staats hopes to keep the streak alive and make it to the big dance. Also coming off of a streak of PR’s is Jordan McDougall (Fr.), who had a stellar track workout on Wednesday. We can’t wait to watch the work she’s been putting in on the track translate to the grass! Also making the trek to Lehigh is Alanah Follis (Fr.), who is really just thankful she won’t be driving this race. This is sure to give her about 3 extra hours of sleep and 200% more spring in her step. Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) and Sarah Lively (Sr.) are making their final Regionals appearances for the dogs. Now that Sarah is forced to ride in Katelyn’s car, the pre-meet karaoke is sure to get her ready to race. With only five girls making the journey for the ladies, every runner really is essential to their success as a team. And we know they won’t stop believin’.
On the men’s side, Will Staab (Fr.) has only two goals for this race: show up and be on time. With his current streak these will be difficult, but as this season has shown anything is possible. After taking a week off of racing, Isaac Montgomery (So.) is back baby! We can only assume in his week-long hiatus he suddenly became a 25:00 guy so watch out folks! Also coming in hot from Harbor Hall is Tomas Aker (So.). No matter how he does in this race, we know he’ll find a way to complain about the course afterwards. Alex Hulbert (Jr.) is also ready to rock, roll, and double knot his shoes. Unfortunately, Hulbert drew the short straw for the third week in a row and has the luxury of driving his 6 favorite teammates up to Lehigh. And for that we are eternally grateful. Rounding out our fab 5 on the men’s side is none other than Matt Lyan (Fr.). Like how much EPO Asbel Kiprop had in his system or how much Tommy Otterbine loves Penn State, no one knows how fast Matt’s gonna run. But we think it’ll be pretty fast.
With NIRCA’s official preview coming out moments before the one people actually read (aka ours), it’s clear the UMBC is the official dark horse. The weather looks like it should be a perfect day for racing at 50* and sunny, so we’re sure to see some fast times. See you in Lehigh and as always go dawgs!!

Meet Recap
On Saturday, seven retrievers piled into Alex’s Mom’s Nissan at 5:41 AM to drive through Saucon Valley. Two others came from Frederick and one from “home”. No matter where they came from, all were going one place: the finish line.
First across the line for the dawgs in 17th was Anna “Steeple Girl” Staats (So.) who started the dawgs streak of having “eh” races. The important thing was that when a Virginia runner came up on her shoulder in the home stretch she made like the basketball team and pulled the upset in 23:57. Next in for the dawgs was none other than Jordan McDougall (Fr.), who put all her guts into the race and spewed all her guts out afterwards. When asked about her finish, her adjective of choice was “tragic”. It’s okay, Jordan gave it her all and we think she did well finishing 137th overall in 28:12. Following her was Alanah Follis (Fr.) whose Dino Socks and oversized shorts led her to a great race finishing 156th overall in 29:01. Next in for the dawgs was Sarah Lively (Sr.) who took 205th place in a very solid run coming through the chute in 34:47. Was it because of all the karaoke she listened to on the car ride there? Probably. Also capping off her senior regionals with a bang was Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who was able to pick a girl and stick on her then outkick her at the finish. The girl? None other than Emily Laird (PSU) who finished in 36:03 to Katelyn’s stellar 209th overall in 35:58. Although many of the girls had mediocre days, the team was still able to pull together a scoring group and finish in last overall! It’s okay, these preps and nerds were really just planning for the bigger competition to come.
On the men’s side, Will Staab (Fr.) not only made it to the meet late, but also managed to forget his jersey. He decided to steal Anna’s, which we’ll allow only because he kept the PR streak a rollin’ for that jersey coming through in 29:44 in 139th place overall. That’s right folks, this jersey has set PR’s every day that it has raced. Next in for the dawgs was Tomas Aker (So.), who had a really fun race... for the first four miles. In true Tomas fashion he said that after four miles the course was horrible and to be fair that is when the hills came in. It’s okay, he still managed to finish in 30:38 in 169th place. Not far behind was Isaac Montgomery (So.) who’s big win of the day was making it to the start line when less than three minutes before the gun went off. Although he wanted to keep up with Will, Isaac was satisfied with his race finishing in 30:39 in 171st. Next across the line in his first regional meet was Matt Lyan (Fr.). He ran like the old dogs and showed what he was made of coming through in 234th place finishing in 32:50. Even though he wasn’t satisfied with his race, Matt has been showing all season that he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the future. The final dawg to come through the chute was Alex Hulbert (Jr.) who had as he calls it “the worst race of his life” even though he still placed relatively well in 253rd finishing in 33:55. After turning his ankle at the half mile, Alex knew the race was done for him. It’s okay though, the 4x400 is the only event that matters. In order to stay consistent with the ladies, the men also pulled off the dead last finish!
Luckily the retrievers will have a chance to redeem themselves next week at the Cavalier Invitational. Be on the lookout for a few upsets to occur!
