Meet Preview
The UMBC Running Club is back baby! After a fast meet at Penn State last year, the team has their sights set high on new PRs and total domination to start the season strong.
Returning to lead the women’s team is former-world-record-holder-Boston-Qualifier-ever-humble Anna Staats (So.). We could put her bio here, but she’s probably already told you about it. Also returning for the dogs is Julia Ciattei (Sr.), who broke every club record under the 800 last track season. We can’t wait to see her famous Ciattei kick! The last of the old dogs is Katelyn Gregory (Sr.), who between being an RA, President of CRU, senior Chemical Engineering major, and of course our own women’s captain, does enough running around everyday to be in prime shape for a PR. The girls team also comes in with a strong set of new runners that are ready to give their best in their first collegiate 6Ks. Jordan McDougall (Fr.) looks to be in great shape after blazing to her first sub 23:00 5K at the scrimmage. The only question is how many eggs she’ll eat after the race to celebrate. Also making her first appearance for the retrievers is Alanah Follis (Fr.) who holds the record for highest percentage of missed meets due to alarm malfunctions at 100%. Elizabeth Blake (Jr.) also looks to crush her first 6K after destroying her first 5K at the scrimmage (that’s right folks, she didn’t run in high school!). Not to be forgotten is Kate Miller (definitely not a freshman) who looks prime and ready to race after a solid performance at the scrimmage.
On the men’s side, it appears to be a dual between Tomas Aker (So.) and Isaac Montgomery (So.) for top dog. These roommates were within 15 seconds of each other at the scrimmage so this is a race you don’t want to miss! Also returning for the men’s team is Ryan Kane (So.), who rumor has it has been putting in a ton of mileage to prepare for this season. After missing the scrimmage for reasons unknown, can Kane become a surprise victor for the dogs this weekend? Another retriever on the come-up is Will Staab (Fr.), who unlike Kane didn’t skip the scrimmage. He showed he could put together a solid 5K, but how will he hold up in a full 8K? Also looking to score for the dawgs is Alvaro Hernandez (Fr.), who after some quick Milesplit stalking has broken 17:30 in the 5K which is uh… pretty dang quick. We also can’t forget our men’s-team-captain-whose-team-lost-the-scrimmage Alex Hulbert (Jr.). Alex PR’d at this meet last year and is looking for the repeat in 2018. Justin Drew (Jr.) is also looking for the repeat PR after completely dominating this course last season. Another guy in contention for a scoring spot is Parker Schading (So.), who was just on the bubble last season and is looking to lead the team to victory just like he lead the car caravan to Patapsco last week. Rounding out the retrievers is a real dark horse in Matthew Lyan (Fr.). He’s definitely in shape so we’ll see how loud this Lyan can roar.
If it’s anything like last year, the course should be rolling hills with a brutal last mile. Right now, the weather looks to be around 70 and cloudy for the race, which is sure to bring some fast times. Stay tuned for results, photos, and recaps after the race. And as always, SCO DAWGS!

The Race
Meet Recap
On Saturday, the retrievers woke up bright and early to face some stiff competition at the Nittany Lion Invitational hosted by Penn State University. Many dogs shined on the cloudy and wet day!
On the women’s side, the team had a strong showing with lots of PRs and almost came away with a top 3 finish, narrowly losing to Ithaca by 5 points. Anna Staats (So.) took it out from the gun to place 7th, cruising to a new PR and club record of 24:35. When asked about the race, Staats’ only reply was “the legs are feelin’ good”. Next in for the dawgs was club-president-super-sprinter Julia Ciattei (Sr.), who tore up the wet and muddy course to finish 34th in 28:38. That’s over a minute faster than last year, folks! Coming in a close third was Jordan McDougall (Fr.) who learned a very important lesson: if the girl you’re running with tells you to pass her, she’ll come back. They always come back. Jordan finished in a stellar 28:54 to take 37th in her first collegiate 6K. Next for the retrievers was Elizabeth Blake (Jr.) who destroyed her first cross country meet ever and even made some friends along the way. Remember fellas, it’s all about having fun! Blake finished 61st in a time of 32:02. A mere two seconds behind in 62nd was Alanah Follis (Fr.) who politely asked where the finish was before absolutely destroying her final kick earning her this week’s Kick of the Week honors. Course walks are important, but we’ll let this one slide. Next in for the girls was Kate Miller (Fr.) who wasn’t far behind in 32:40 and placed 66th. Watch out for the future showdowns between Elizabeth, Kate, and Alanah. It’s sure to be some good competition! Rounding out the dogs was Katelyn Gregory (Sr.). After starting in box 9, it was sure to be a good race for Gregory, who absolutely annihilated her time from last season by 4 minutes to come in 71st in 34:34. If that’s not enough, Katelyn even stopped to tie her shoe during the race! Impressive to say the least.
The men’s team was full of surprises, with everyone’s favorite Sam Schroeder (???) leading the way in second place in a stellar time of 26:26. That’s club record worthy if we’ve ever seen it! Unfortunately, Sam is currently enrolled at George Washington University, making him ineligible for records. At least there’s still time to transfer! Coming in a surprise first for the dogs was Will Staab (Fr.) who finished in an incredible 30:06 to take 45th. Not only that, but he forgot his shoes and had to wear the spikes of the infamous Andrew Bowling (Adult.). Not only was this a PR, but also the fastest those shoes have ever gone at a cross country race. Next in for the retrievers was Isaac Montgomery (So.). Although he slept for the entire car ride there, Isaac managed to wake up and go out too hard. Isaac faded to 75th in 31:43. Maybe if he took up less of the back seat he could run faster… just sayin’. Matt Lyan (Fr.) was next in after informing the team that unfortunately his last name is not pronounced lion. It’s excusable though because Lyan had a stellar first 8K finishing in 32:42 to place 88th even though the race was “a lot longer than a 5K”. Following close behind Matt was Tomas Aker (So.) who attempted to drop out of the race after getting in the chute. Luckily an official pulled him back in and allowed him to score the team some much needed points coming in 91st for the dogs in 33:10. He was even able to outkick a Penn State runner in what might have been the saddest death march this club has ever seen. Hopefully next meet he’ll remember his infamous pre-race egg salad sandwich. Rounding out the scorers for the retrievers was Alex Hulbert (Jr.) who stayed awake through the entire car ride which ultimately did him in for the race. Despite this, Hulbert still placed 103rd in 33:57, which is exactly the same time he ran last year. Consistency is key. Not far behind in 105th was Ryan Kane (So.), who like Isaac decided to attempt the fly and die approach. Kane came through the chute in 34:28. Rounding out the retrievers was Justin Drew (Jr.) who finished in 38:04. He battled through the rain to come in 120th, bettering his place by two spots over last year! Despite the difficult conditions, the men managed to finish 8th falling to West Virginia by only 10 points!
The team decided to celebrate their performances with some Quaker, Steak, and Lube. Jason Winkler (Sr.) realized he really wanted to sweat after watching everyone run around. He decided the best way to do this was with some good old-fashioned triple atomic hot sauce. Some of the other members of the men’s team including Alex, Isaac, Anna, and Tomas also partook in the event, which brought everyone to tears in more ways than one. The rust has been busted and the retrievers return next week at the Princeton Invitational!
