Meet Preview
This Saturday, the UMBC Running Club travels to Penn State to compete in the Nittany Lion Invitational. With Princeton and Regionals coming up, this is the last chance for the retrievers to test their fitness and to adjust their training.
In the women's race, our top 2, Anna Staats (Fr.) and Jess Cohen (Sr.) will not be competing making this the perfect opportunity for our 3, 4, 5 to really shine. The real question is in what kind of shape are twins Julia (Fr.) and Naomi Corns (Fr.). Both had stellar high school careers with Julia running 19:40 and Naomi 20:37 in 5k XC. It's October now so you know what that means... it's corns season folks. Coming back from a solid performance in D.C., Julia Ciattei (Jr.) has her eyes set on being our #1. Although with her sister Anna Ciattei (Jr.) not competing, the double twin pack-up of glory will unfortunately not come to fruition. Competing in her first ever 6k, Christina Saba (So.) is looking to prove once and for all that she's like... pretty fast. In the scrimmage, she finished only 35 seconds behind Julia. Rounding out our women's team we have Ashleigh Turnbaugh (Fr.), Bella Facchine (Sr.), and Katelyn Gregory (Jr.). At the scrimmage, Turnbaugh was the fastest of the 3. Her PR of 22:03 from high school proves she's got the talent. Facchine faced a tough course on her first 6k last Saturday so she's looking for a big PR. Gregory opens up her 2017 season as well... with her new RA position and dealing with junior year chemical engineering, it's clear she has the mental toughness for anything.
In the men's race, Dawit Tegegn (So.) is looking to hang with the Penn State guys and to prove he's the future. We know he's got the talent and has been putting the work in, it's just a matter of time before he has a breakthrough... expect great things. With Thomas Ryba (Sr.) and Tomas Aker (Fr.) absent, the battle for #2 is gonna be epic. Our top freshman Issac Montgomery (Fr.) has been on a roll lately with insane consistency. His powerful stride never fails to strike fear in his competitors. Brandon Folio (Jr.) decided he didn't like the fat life and thus returned to training 11 days ago. How quickly will his fitness return? Supreme leader Andrew Bowling (Sr.) is the one to look out for, this past week he cashed in with some big time fitness gains. If he doesn't PR it'll be a heartbreaker. But we can't forget about Sam Clemens (Fr.), who is still undefeated against Drew. Rumor has it he ran 1120m repeats in 3:45 on a grass loop. Watch out Dawit. On Wednesday, a few of us got a glimpse of Jeremy Ruta (Fr.) doing 8x1k all at sub 6 pace on the track. Beware folks, he may kill it in his debut 8k. The rivalry between Captain Alex Hulbert (So.) and Justin Hua (Fr.) continues after two consecutive races of finishing within 1 second of each other. We spoke to Alex earlier this week... "I don't really wanna go to the Penn State race," he said. Despite running 1120m repeats in 4:05 on Wednesday, he clearly isn't fully confident that he can keep his undefeated streak against Hua. Last year, Justin Drew (So.) PR'd on the hardest course of the season with a 37:58. He's looked fantastic so far... look out for him to demolish that PR in the upcoming weeks. After 4 years without racing, Jason Winkler (Sr.) is the wild card in his debut 8k. He may not be in peak shape yet but he's a dedicated wednesday night track workout participator. His love for running is admirable. However, there's one person who loves running more than Winkler... Rick Linkous (Sr.) and he's ready to prove that his 54:59 was indeed a fluke.
The course will be rolling hills with a difficult last mile. The weather appears to be mid-70's and sunny, a perfect day to watch an XC race. We encourage everybody to attend and support our athletes! Stay tuned for results, photos, video after the race. Let's go dawgs!

The Race
Meet Recap
On Saturday, the UMBC Running Club traveled to Penn State University to compete in the Nittany Lion Invitational. Despite the long drive and intense sun, the retrievers were able to walk away with 13 new PR's!
In the women's race, the Retrievers were lead by Julia Corns (Fr.) who came through 5k a full 2 minutes faster than her scrimmage time and then held on for a whole 'nother kilometer finishing 38th in 26:45. A couple minutes back, Naomi Corns (Fr.) battled severe sleep deprivation to finish 74th in 28:40. Rumor has it she slept though her alarm and barely got up in time. Must've been a lit friday night. The most outstanding race for the women goes to Christina Saba (Sr.) who worked her way back from last to being in the top 3, finishing 89th in 29:50. According to trusted sources, her collegiate 800m PR is just north of 4:00. Doing the math, that means her performance today was... um... carry the 1... uh... really fast. Just a few seconds back, VP Julia Ciattei (Jr.) was tearing it up, finishing 91st in 29:57. Our most loyal Turnbaugh, Ashleigh Turnbaugh (Fr.) had a significant improvement from the scrimmage to finish 97th in 31:04. However, the biggest improvement came from Bella Facchine (Sr.) who improved over 4 minutes from DC to finish 112th in 32:32. Her reward for the incredible performance was post race bbq. Rounding out the top 7 is Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) who excelled in the race finishing 123rd in 38:05 yet still had enough energy for grade A cheering. Clearly she didn't run hard enough.
The women finished 7th out of 9 teams and thats without their #1 and #2!
In the men's race, the Retrievers were lead by Dawit Tegegn (So.) who destroyed his previous PR of 29:30 finishing 36th in 28:35. This was the first time Dawit beat his master, Brandon Folio (Sr.). He made sure to thank Folio for all of the wisdom and guidance by respectfully giving him the bird. The battle for 2nd lived up to expectation with Folio just barely closing on Issac Montgomery (Fr.). The lack of base training for Folio was obvious but he lucked out once the glycogen from Issac's grapes were depleted. Folio finished 73rd in 30:35 and Montgomery finished 77th in a PR time of 30:43. The PR's continued as Sam Clemens (Fr.) and Drew Bowling (Sr.) battled for 4th. Clemens went out hard with a 5:25 first mile and then experienced a steady 4 mile break down to finish 92nd in a PR time of 31:43. On the other hand, Bowling played it conservative and confirmed he is now a true distance runner, doing the mo-bot in his first time scoring. He finished 102nd in a PR time of 32:06. Alex Hulbert (So.) kept the PR ball rolling finishing 120th in 33:57. Between his obliterated hip, ankle, and back it’s amazing he could even stand for a photo after the race... wait... The KOTW goes to Justin Drew (So.) who finished a Penn State runner on his home turf finishing 122nd in a huge 3 minute PR of 34:14! But the guy who showed true grit was Justin Hua (Fr.) who wanted so badly to beat Hulbert that he self destructed his race with a 6:10 first mile. Amazingly he still finished 139th in 37:10. In his first ever 8k, not many people had hope for Jason Winkler (Sr.), not even himself. The esteemed long jumper battled the friction of basketball shorts and mental anguish to finish 152nd in 44:12. His valiant effort proved the haters wrong... kind of. Rounding out the retrievers elite 10, Rick Linkous (Sr.) proved his performance in DC was actually not a fluke as he cruised into a solid DNF. Clearly the grad school application process was getting to him as he admittedly fantasized about driving back to campus to do some pipetting.
Despite the slew of PR’s, the retrievers only finished 9th out of 10 schools.
The Retrievers celebrated with a post-race meal at Quaker Steak & Lube where Rick took his self-hate out on his tongue with a deadly amount of triple atomic hot sauce. Sam finally earned his sophomore status taking the sauce without flinching, but then quickly became a freshman again after his choir performance on the ride the home.
