Meet Preview
This Sunday, the retrievers continue their regular season tour of states slightly north of Maryland at the Princeton Invitational. After some great workouts this past week, this meet is sure to be a good indicator of where everyone is before regionals. The biggest change from last year comes in an entirely new course in an entirely New Jersey. The new course is supposed to be flat and fast – so it shouldn’t be too much of a change.
The girl’s team is the main benefactor from this new course. In the past, Princeton has been an incredibly fast course but at the cost of the women’s race being 200 meters long. Looking to lead the way is Anna Staats (So.), who after cremating her legs in some mile repeats Wednesday is looking to finally get the duck she’s been missing these past few months. Also coming back red hot for the retrievers is Jordan McDougall (Fr.) who had a great showing at Penn State last week. The real question though is if she’ll be able to hang with workout partner Bella Fettuccini (Super Sr.). None of us are sure how many years Bella has been at UMBC, but this showdown between the old and new dogs is sure to be a good one! Also returning from a hiatus for the retrievers is Anna Ciattei (Sr.), who after watching her brother get second at both indoor and outdoor NCAAs last year is fired up for some fast running. Also hoping to show that Vincent isn’t the best runner in the family is our supreme leader Julia Ciattei (Sr.). That’s right. The twin showdown is back! Unfortunately, that’s the only twin showdown will see as only ½ of our Corns duo is returning this week. That’s right Julia.. no wait Naomi Corns (So.) looks locked and loaded for a good race after a strong showing at the scrimmage. It’s okay though, her sister will be there in spirit. Also returning from a break for the retrievers is Sarah Lively (Sr.). We haven’t seen much of her this year, but we’ll just assume that means she’s been altitude training with Dawit Tegegn (Jr.). After having a 100% accurate result last week that was in no way a timer error, Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) is looking to cheer her way to anther stellar time. No matter what we know she’ll be happy. Also coming off of a hot Penn State race is Alanah Follis (Fr.) and Kate Miller(FRESHMAN). They were neck and neck last race so this matchup is sure to be one to watch!
For the men, the new course comes with the hope of new possibilities and less people getting marshalled to the finish line before finishing their second loop. The retrievers’ number one from last week Will Staab (Fr.) returns from an impressive run, but will have some stiff competition from both inside and outside the team. Returning from a week one absence is Al Hernandez (Fr.), who looks to improve on his result from the scrimmage and will definitely pose a challenge to Staab. Another promising freshman is Raffaele DeRose (Fr.) who surprised everyone at the scrimmage simply by showing up. Now it’s time to show out as he competes in his first collegiate 8K. Not to be overlooked is everyone’s favorite freshman Sam Clemens (Fr.), who after missing the registration deadline for Penn State is just happy to be running. Rounding out our strong freshmen squad is Matthew Lyan (Fr.). After getting the hang of 8Ks last week it’ll be interesting to see what he can do. These fab five are a strong squad already and we haven’t even mentioned our upperclassmen! Hoping to improve on last week’s time is the immortal Alex Hulbert (Jr.) who has proudly stated he doesn’t think he can die. We’ll see how he looks at mile four. Also hoping not to die this meet is Tomas Aker (So.) who after last week is definitely going to pack food this time. Right Tomas? Someone who will undoubtedly outperform last week is Jason Winkler (Sr.). After playing videographer last meet, Jason appears to be in the perfect shape to run 50 meters. 5 miles? Yet to be determined. Also returning from a brief hiatus is Brian Hung (So.) who recently ran a 16:30 on the track for a 5K time trial. That's fast. It’s obvious he’s been doing workouts, but how will Hung hang with the top dogs for a full 8K? In addition, he’ll have to get through Ryan Kane (So.) and Justin Drew (Jr.) who both had impressive showings at last week’s meet. The guys have been going back and forth all season and we’re thrilled to see who’s going to come out on top this week.
The weather looks to be in the mid-50s and sunny, the perfect October racing weather. With sunny skies and fresh legs this team looks to be on the cusp of something great. LET'S GO DOGS!!

THE RACE
MEET RECAP
Like any good episode of Stranger Things, the UMBC retrievers began their quest to the Princeton Invitational by everyone collectively asking “Where’s Will?”. Whether he was in the upside down or at home we’ll never truly know, but we do know Will Staab (Fr.) managed to oversleep and miss the meet. A huge disappointment to say the least.
The women’s team, on the other hand, showed up and showed out on a sunny Sunday to welcome many new PR’s and a strong team performance. The women had their largest team to date and managed to place 8th out of 12 teams, beating the likes of George Washington, American, Stony Brook, and Loyola! Leading the way for the retrievers was Anna Staats (So.) who channeled her inner Erin Finn by taking it out hard from the digeridoo and having a finish that looked exactly like Finn’s 10K at Big Ten’s. That’s right folks, it was ugly. Staats continued her streak of placing 7th in a new club record time of 23:06! Next in for the retrievers was Julia Ciattei (Sr.), who spent her last cross country race proving she was the alpha Ciattei. Julia came through in an impressive 26:05 to take 62nd for the dawgs. The next twin across the line was none other than Naomi Corns (So.) who following close behind in 26:14 in 67th, which is extra impressive considering she woke up with a cold that morning. The showdown between Jordan McDougall (Fr.) and Bella Cavatappi (Sr.) lived up to hype as they were neck and neck the entire race. Jordan ended up on top this time in 76th at 26:52 with Bella following close behind in 79th in 26:57. The young dawg wins this one, but catch these two going back and forth in Wednesday night track workouts for the rest of the season. Rounding out the scoring positions for the dogs was Alanah Follis (Fr.) and Anna Ciattei (Sr.) who had a showdown of their own. Yet again, the young Alanah came out on top in 102nd in 28:50 while Anna channeled her older brother by having an insane kick but still came up short in 105th in 29:04. She did, however, pass 10 girls in the final stretch and for that earns this week's Kick of the Week! Next across the line was Kate Miller (Fr?) who sped through the course like she sped through the New Jersey turnpike. Kate finished in an impressive 30:10 at 118th place. That’s over 2 minutes faster than last week! Rounding out our tremendous ten were Sarah Lively (Sr.) and Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who each had tremendous races in their own right. Although Sarah won out of the two in 32:48 coming in 131st, Katelyn was the real winner of the day because she got to enjoy some car karaoke with Jason. Not only that, but Katelyn had a massive season PR in 33:59 coming in 134th place.
On the men’s side, the retrievers were led by the ever supportive and encouraging Brian Hung (So.). When asked how he felt about the race, he was overjoyed and said he “didn’t want to be here” and “wasn’t sure why [he] came”. It’s positive thinking like that that led Brian to run 29:27 and place 104th. Closing hard and finishing not far behind in a fantastic first 8K was Alvaro Hernandez (Fr.) in 106th at 29:33. Although he started slow, apparently still groggy from his long nap in the car, Al was able to slowly pick off people and showed how cross country races are supposed to be run. Coming in next for the retrievers was Tomas Aker (So.), who also had a positive take on the day ranting about how he “hated the course”. It’s okay Tomas’s times this season are droppin like the NASDAQ as he came in at a crisp 30:28 in 132nd place. Apparently not scared off from last meet, Matt Lyan (Fr.) was back and better than ever finishing in 145th place in a time of 31:06. That’s a full 1:36 off of last week. If he keeps this up, he’ll be running with Lopez Lomong in no time. Raffaele DeRose (Fr.) came through the chute in fifth for the dawgs in 32:15 placing 168th. No one really knows where he was when he wasn’t racing, but we can only assume he was picking up chicks with his clout goggles. Next across the line was Alex Hulbert (Jr.) who lost his shoe in the first 50 meters of the race and decided to give himself the handicap by stopping to retie it. After starting out in a solid last place, Alex was able to pass 30 runners and finish in 179th. More impressive was that according to Hulbert his time of 32:52 “was probably a new PR maybe I don’t keep track of anything except the only event that matters: the 400”. We’ll trust him on this one. After intently watching the DI race the day before, Ryan Kane (So.) decided to go all out for his last race of the season. He ended the season on a high note by choking on spit on his way to a 182nd place finish in 32:56. The next duo to cross the line was Justin Drew (Jr.) and Sam Clemens (Fr.), who ran together for the majority of the race. Sam managed to forget his jersey and had to borrow Bella’s, which might explain why his pace was so close to hers. Classic freshman. Justin was able to close hard and get the win in 34:50 in 197th place while Sam finished just behind in 199th place at 34:53. Although he had a disappointing race, Sam was really just looking forward to the sauce on his sandwich from Hoagie Haven. The final retriever to finish was Jason Winkler (Sr.), who after not running for a week just wanted to see where his fitness was and maybe make a friend along the way. He accomplished both of those, befriending Rishi Patel (Rutgers) mid race while they both chatted from the back of the pack in 206th and 207th. Although running is really more about the connections you make, Jason showed what zero fitness meant to him by running 39:40. More importantly he beat Keith’s zero fitness 40:00 8K from last season to which he excitedly stated, and I quote, “suck it Keith”. The men’s team had a tough day without some of their top runners and finished in 17th, but the slew of PR’s made it a great day for the dogs!
