Meet Preview
This Sunday, the retrievers conclude their regular season with the Princeton Invitational. Our athlete's have put in months of hard work and are looking to see how fast they can go.
In the women's race, the retrievers are lead by Jess Cohen (Sr.) who after running 4xmile in under 6:30 is ready for something special. Remember folks, the club record is 26:22. Destroying her legs in a 10 miler last weekend, Anna Staats (Fr.) has to be worried if she can perform up to expectations. But we aren't, we know she'll give 110%. Fortunately, ambulance services will be provided. With the Corns twins taking a by-week the rest of our top 5 is up in the air. Supposedly Julia and Anna Ciattei (Jr.) were spotted doing a long run last Sunday and we can't forget about Christina Saba (Sr.) who ran super impressive going out conservatively at Penn State. Does she go balls to the wall this Sunday? Stay tuned to find out. But watch out for Bella Facchine (Sr.) who's on week 4 of consecutive races. The rust has certainly been busted. Rounding out the top 7, Sarah Lively (So.) returns to action after a 3 week hiatus. Her legs should be as fresh as D-hall pizza.
In the men's race, the retrievers are lead by Dawit Tegegn (So.) who's been grooming his training specifically for Princeton. This week we caught up with Dawit who claimed to run 4xmile in 5:15. "It felt ok" he exclaimed with confidence knowing very well he's gonna entertain us with a possible sub-28. However, the real question is what kind of shape Thomas Ryba (Sr.) and Tomas Aker (Fr.) are in. Ryba clicked off a few sub 5:20's in the workout on Tuesday and Aker has been battling a calf injury. "27:59 is the goal" Aker said. His ambition is so unparalleled, that if he runs 27:59 or faster this Sunday, we will personally fund his hoagie. Brandon Folio (Sr.) has put his body through mayhem trying to quickly regain form. Defending his fragile ego, he likes to humblebrag about his 27:44 from last year, but this time around he'll be lucky to get within 2 minutes of that time. This could be the chance for Issac Montgomery (Fr.) to release the beast. He successfully toyed with Folio mentally in the workout, it's time for him to wreck Princeton's elite. The battle for 6th could get interesting between Drew Bowling (Sr.) and Sam Clemens (Fr.) with Bowling having the superior Tuesday workout knocking out 5:45's and then coming back Thursday with a 4 mile progressive tempo that only Folio could hang with. But don't forget, Clemens is a 10:30 2 miler and undefeated against Bowling. Rounding out the top 7 is Alex Hulbert (So.) who came off a surprising PR last week and certainly wants more. Unfortunately he's been struggling with confidence all season, only doing his workouts alone on a mis-measured grass loop. Maybe he's in denial about his fitness, or maybe he knows something we don't...
Also keep an eye out for Jeremy Ruta (Fr.) and Justin Drew (So.). Ruta has been killing the workouts but chose sleep over last weeks race. This begs the question... why do we run? Drew just came off a massive PR from Penn State and something tells me he's got more in the tank. Speaking of Justins who probably have more in the tank, Justin Hua (Fr.) coming off a painful performance from Penn State is looking to experience the Princeton magic. But we need to address the elephant in the room. Last year at Princeton Tanny Ser (Sr.) ran an incredible 34:38, a huge PR that has not been approached since. His training has been going well so don't count him out. But the most anticipated, is the return of Keith Ferguson (So.) who has decided to see what his raw talent is by running an 8k with zero training. Respect.
The Princeton course is flat with 2 big loops and a small loop. The weather appears to be low 80s and sunny so whether you're spectating or running, make sure to hydrate and mentally prepare for the Princeton experience. Stay tuned for results, video, and the meet recap after the race. Lets go dawgs!!

THE RACE
MEET RECAP
On Sunday, the UMBC Running Club competed in the Princeton Invitational in the search of setting their life time personal best. While many had stellar performances, the club still has much to prove at regionals.
In the women’s race, the retrievers were lead by Jess... look we have to come clean about something... I know this will come as a shock to all of you but Jess Cohen is only semi-real. The real leader of the women is Nicole Dawson (Sr.) who bided her time over the first 4k and then flew by what seemed like half the field to finish 15th in 26:01. Right behind, Anna Staats (Fr.) pushed the pace from the start and held on to an impressive 2 minute PR finishing 19th in 26:14. But over the last 1k, she definitely had that “I-should-have-done-the-Tuesday-workout” look on her face. Scoring 3rd and 4th for the team, Julia and Anna Ciattei (Jr.) showed huge gains in fitness finishing 48th and 64th in 28:56 and 29:40 respectively. Each year however, one of the Ciattei’s seem to fall victim to mysterious mind altering forces on the finishing straight. Last year Anna reported dream-like hallucinations and this year Julia became directionally challenged, almost running through the left side of the chute. Luckily, Christina Saba (Sr.) was able to avoid the demons, finishing 70th in 29:59. Despite knee pain hampering her kick, she was able to resist her natural rage-like tendencies to an impressive sub-30. placing 6th for the team, Bella Facchine (Sr.) fought hard to finish 85th in 32:49. She’s had the longest season of the squad and we know she’s ready to celebrate her hard work. Using the efficiency of a toe-strike that brought Drew to tears, Sarah Lively (So.) was able to improve massively from the scrimmage to finish 90th in 34:06. The women finished 6th and that’s without the Corns!
In the men’s race, the retrievers were lead by Dawit Tegegn (So.) who battled knee pain and isolation to finish 45th in 28:48. Today might not’ve been the sub 28 performance that he was looking for, but on the bright side he discovered his true talent... photography. Finishing in a surprising 2nd place for the team, Brandon Folio (Sr.) even split from the start to finish 82nd in 30:10. Like father like son, Folio also didn’t break his time barrier, but he really paid the price in tolls. Hanging on to a solid PR, Issac Montgomery (Fr.) mastered the grind finishing 87th in 30:39. After the race, Folio thanked him for the mental alley-oop. Unfortunately it was a rough day for the Thomas’s with Thomas Ryba (Sr.) finishing 92nd in 30:51 and Tomas Aker (Fr.) finishing 92nd in 31:39. Ryba fell victim to a short bout of overtraining and Aker stepped in an un-proper hole. However, Aker was able to pull off the KOTW, turning on the afterburners to incinerate a Penn State runner. The battle for 6th lived up to expectation with Drew Bowling (Sr.) with Sam Clemens (Fr.) racing neck and neck all the way until way until 7k when Clemens experienced the blow up of the century. Bowling and Clemens finished 109th in 32:22 and 128th in 33:23 respectively. In his debut 8k, Jeremy Ruta (Fr.) had an extremely impressive showing, holding off the likes of Hulbert and Hua and finishing 132nd in 33:53. Speaking of our most exciting rivalry, Alex Hulbert (So.) once again barely held off Justin Hua (Fr.) to finish 136th in 34:43 Hua had a huge 2+ minute PR to finish 139th in 34:53. In his first ever finish in no-mans-land, Justin Drew (So.) continued his impressive race streak finishing 143rd in 35:02. Rounding out the retriever's elite, Keith Ferguson (So.) found experimentally that his raw 8k ability with zero training is exactly 40:00.0. Like F=ma, and pi, the physics of the universe works in beautiful ways. The men finished 9th.
