Meet Preview
On Sunday, the Retrievers will host, yes host, their third ever invitational. With teams from six different area schools coming it’s sure to be a good race. As this is the last meet for the dawgs, they also hope to score some fast times, long jumps, and terrific throws!
In the field events, we’ve got school record holder Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) hoping to start the meet off right for the dawgs in the shotput. She’ll have some competition from UMD, but we’re pretty sure Katelyn can take ‘em. Also sticking to the field for the dawgs is Alayna Cavey (Fr.) who has her sights set on the school record in the long jump. She didn’t list a seed, but we’re pretty sure she can go 20+ feet. On them men’s side, Gavin Prather (So.) and Tomas Aker (So.) are hoping to leap their way onto the podium. Both are jumping out of their comfort zone for this event and we’re excited to see what they can accomplish. Not leaving his comfort zone, however, is none other than Nicholas Ramial (Fr.). Unfortunately, there’s no triple jump, but he’ll get three attempts at the long jump, which by our math is pretty much the same thing.
The distance events will hopefully by dominated by UMBC as the school brings out their best for this last meet of the year. Leading off for the retrievers is the women’s 4x800, which has exactly 0.5 teams as competition. Lead by Julia Ciattei (Sr.) and Anna Ciattei (Sr.), who are actually racing on the same team for the last time. They’ll be joined by Anna Staats (So.) who plans to toe the line as much as possible in her maybe final meet for the club team. She ran Boston two weeks ago, which basically means she’s already started training for her next 800 and can’t imagine running any distance below a 5K. Now I bet you’re wondering who the fourth leg on this relay is. That’s okay, we are too! Because she’s clinically insane, Anna Staats (So.) is planning on toeing the line right after for the women’s 5000. Luckily, she’s been blessed with the number 169 so we think she’ll be A-Okay. This is the event to watch, as Nicole Dawson (Adult.) is returning to try and beat Anna by less than 5 seconds just like in every race last year. Also coming out for the dawgs is Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who is taking her victory lap as a senior before returning for a 5th year (we’re pretty convinced this is just because she loves us so much). Not to be overlooked is Kate Miller (Probably not graduating this year) who is raring and ready to run a PR. In the men’s 5K, the dynamic duo of Brian Hung (So.) and Matt Lyan (Fr.) are trying to show everyone what they’re made of. With the mens and women’s 5Ks combined, it’s really anyone’s race. In the 1500, Katelyn Gregory (Sr.), hopes to keep her stellar races rolling as she gives Anna a run for her money in the “who can participate in the most events” challenge. Also running for the dawgs, the dirty dawgs that is, is Emma Kartalia (So.). She’s living with Anna Staats (So.) (also running) next year so the 1500 is more of a race for who gets dibs on the first shower in the morning than anything. The men’s 1500 is, in a word, massive. With three heats and 24 athlete’s this one is really anyone’s race. Hailing from the hilltop are Brian Hung (So.), Matt Lyan (Fr.), and Alex Hulburt (Jr.) all in the first heat. Brian and Alex listed conservative seed times of 5:30 and 5:40 but we wouldn’t be surprised if they broke 5:00 this race. After accidentally getting put in the fast heat at UMD, Matt has elected not to list any time to ensure that doesn’t happen again. As is tradition, at least one freshman must run the 3K steeple for UMBC. This time, it’s between Kate Miller (Fr.), Al Hernandez (Fr.), Matt Lyan (Fr.), and John Huddle (Fr.) as to who’s going to take the plunge. As of Friday night, the pitt looked like something out of Shrek, so hopefully everyone can stay on their feet. Also running the 3K for the dawgs is Brian Hung (So.). Him and Matt may have some trouble getting over the barriers but as they say teamwork makes the dream work! We’re saddened to announce Anna has withdrawn from the steeplechase after failing to jump over a 6-inch-high chain and nearly ending her season. In the 800, Anna Staats (So.) hopes to bring one home for the dawgs and use one of her two remaining fast twitch muscles. Apparently she thinks she can run 2:38, which is entirely reasonable and honestly probably going to happen. She’s going up against Nicole Dawson (Adult.) again which will make it a fun race. On the men’s side Alex “Can’t Run A 400 Cause His Hamstring Hurts” Hulburt (Jr.) has decided to give the 800 a go. He’s got some good competition, but we’re sure he can pull of something magical. Not to be overlooked as the most important event of the meet is Devil Takes the Hindmost. On the women’s side, Anna Staats (So.), Emma Kartalia (So.), and Kate Miller (Uh.) are battling to the death as three of the four women who registered. The men’s race is sure to be a lot more interesting as 17 men and 7 retrievers battle for glory. We’ve got Alex Hulburt, Tomas Aker, Al Hernandez, Isaac Montgomery, Ryan Kane, Jason Winkler, and John Huddle battling for glory in what is sure to be a fun but difficult race.
The sprints side is looking as strong as ever for the retrievers. Alanah Follis (Fr.) hopes to get off to a good start in the 100 and destroy the two other girls signed up. She’s got no seed time listed, but we don’t think she’ll be more than 5 seconds off the world record! On the men’s side, Thomas Ryba (Adult.) is back baby! He’s attempting to show us that he’s more than the 5 mile yogs he’s been logging on strava these past few weeks. The real star of the show, however, is tongue’s out gun’s out Cole Bowden (So.) our resident sprinter. He’s in lane 4 of the fast heat, and we can’t wait to see him come out on top. On the women’s side in the 200 meter, three retrievers will face off in what looks to be a club record setting race. Anna Ciattei (Sr.) and Julia Ciattei (Sr.) have been placed in lanes 1 and 8, which is the farthest they’ve ever been from each other. Also in the mix is Alanah Follis (Fr.) who after having a great cross country season is really showing she can do it all. On the men’s side Tomas Aker (So.) and Victor Adebanjo (Fr.) are ready to race their first 200 in a while and grab some PR’s. It’ll be tough to win, though, as they’ve got Thomas Ryba (Adult.), sprinter extraordinaire, in their heat. Two heats later is Cole Bowden (So.) who has been training every night for months for this very moment. As usual, the men have loaded up the 400 meter, which our club is known best for. Tomas Aker (So.), Gavin Prather (So.), and Victor Adebanjo (Fr.) will lead it off for the dawgs in the first heat. All have listed no seed times, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a club record out of one of them. Trenton Foster (Jr.) is also in it to win it for the dawgs as he hopes to bring back some of last year’s magic without any of last year’s training. The women area also entering a 4x400 which is sure to be a race for the ages. We’ll probably see the Ciattei twins toe the line, but anyone else is anyone’s game. On the men’s side, the UMBC retrievers will be challenged by not only Villanova, UMD, and Towson, but also the Dirty Dawgs. It’s sure to be a race for the ages and a can’t miss race for this meet. Just for funsies, as Julia would say, the retrievers have also entered in the mixed SMR. Anna, Alanah, Cole, and Victor are planning on teaming up for it, but who runs what leg is anyone’s guess.
With temperatures looking to be in the mid to upper 60s and sunny it’s the perfect day for a track meet. Come on down to the track to support your dawgs in their last meet of the year! And as always: SCO BIG DAWGS!!!

Meet Recap
On Sunday, the Retrievers successfully hosted their third annual invitational. Six teams competed on the men’s side while the women had five teams in attendance. This was a resounding success and everyone had a great time!
The group dominated the field events, headlined by Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who launched a 7.9 meter (or 25.91 freedom units) shot to take the win by over two meters! Making her shotput debut was Alayna Cavey (Fr.) who was absolutely dominate and scored third place for the dawgs. Alayna also showed her fantastic range as she went immediately to the long jump pit, where she leapt her way to a first place finish of 14’ 8.5” and a NEW CLUB RECORD! The men had similar successes in the field, as Jason Winkler (Sr.) and Michael Eurice (So.) went 1-2 in the shotput. The dawgs saw similar success in the long jump as Nicholas Ramial (Fr.) absolutely annihilated the club record in a second place finish of 18’ 3”. He was also joined by former club record holder Tomas Aker (So.) as well as the ever-impressive Gavin Prather (So.) who also broke the previous club record.
In the distance events, the dawgs started off strong to take first in both the men’s and women’s 4x800 relay. The women’s team of Anna Staats (So.), Anna Ciattei (Sr.), Julia Ciattei (Sr.), and Alanah Follis (Fr.) stole the show and brought it home for the dawgs in 11:56. On the men’s side, John Huddle (So.), Matthew Glessner (Adult.), Thomas Ryba (Less of an Adult.), and Brian Hung (So.) teamed up for the win. Their time mysteriously disappeared, but we’re going to assume it was pretty quick. Next up was the ever-exciting 5,000 meter dash, featuring the battle of the ages between Anna Staats and Nicole Dawson (Old.). As both started flying through the laps, it was tense as to who would win. This time, Staats took the win and lost her lunch immediately after. Not to be overshadowed though was Kate Miller (Yet to be determined.) who had a phenomenal race placing third with a time of 23:04. We can’t wait what she can do in cross country next season. Also rounding out the field for the dawgs was Katelyn, who somehow decided just doing shotput wasn’t painful enough and wanted to run the 5K. on them men’s side, Brian came back from the 4x800 in a bit of a rough race, joining Anna in vomiting – now at lap 11! Because both of them love pain so much, Katelyn and Anna also slogged their way through the 1500 meter. Both looked like they were having a rough time, but really just wanted to score points for the dawgs. Emma Kartalia (So.), however, stole the show to place second in 5:25! That’s pretty quick for someone who has never shown up to practice! On the men’s side, the retrievers decided to show off their teamwork ability and pace Michael Barber (Towson.) to a stellar race. Brian and Matt Lyan (Rawr XD.) had a nice and easy 1450 meters then decided to make the last 50 an all-out sprint. Brian came out on top and proved that his recovery ability is second to none. Everyone’s favorite event, the steeplechase, came next for the distance dawgs. Kate proved she wasn’t a freshman by managing to make it over every single barrier and grabbing fourth for the retrievers! On the men’s side, a slew of steeplers stretched their shins by splashing into the (s)pit. Brian, Matt, Al Hernandez (Fr.), and John cleared their 35 barriers and cooled off on the hot April afternoon. Anna and Nicole had another showdown in the women’s 800. Both of them ran… uh… not too fast but had a good time with Anna coming out on top. Then came the final race, the Devil Takes the Hindmost, or as we’ll now be referring to it as, Hulburt takes the Hindmost. A myriad of retrievers entered the race, but in the end none remained. Was it because Alex was just too cute? Probably.
On the sprints side, Alanah ran right from the 4x800 to kick things off for the dawgs finishing second in the 100m a mere one hundredth off the club record in 14.43. The men saw club cutie Cole Bowden (So.) destroy the 100m club record in 11.5! Next was Thomas, former retriever and club record holder, in 11.71. In the 200 meter, Alanah returned to score third for the dawgs in a stellar 33.81! The star of that show, however, was the fast Anna (Ciattei that is) who took first overall for the dawgs! On the men’s side, Thomas and Cole returned for another battle of the ages. Cole showed that he really is the top sprinter on the team by coming in third for the dawgs in 24.18, still not good enough to break the record of Andrew Bowling (Czech Citizen.). Making his debut for UMBC was none other than Victor Adebanjo (Fr.) who won the award for hardest name to pronounce. The 400m was dominated by the dawgs, led by Gavin in blazing 53.18, which somehow didn’t break the club record. Next across the line was Tomas then Trent “Only Runs the 400” Foster (Jr.) who lived up to his name in a speedy 57.21 clocking. After this came Al in fifth place, barely missing the 60 second barrier. It’s okay Al, you’ll get there. Victor came back baby for a solid run followed closely by Michael Eurice (Jr.). The women’s 4x100 tag team of two Ciattei’s, a Follis, and a Gregory whipped across the track in first place in 66.14. On the men’s side, the retrievers came a close second to George Mason in a NEW CLUB RECORD of 46.4! The quartet consisted of Tomas, Thomas, Jason, and Cole! As always, the 4x400 failed to disappoint. The dawgs took second in the women’s race with Kate, Katelyn, Anna Ciattei, and Julia in a NEW CLUB RECORD of 5:40.27. On the men’s side, UMBC fielded three teams in what was the most competitive event of the meet. The Dirty Dawgs, who won’t be named, blazed to a first place finish in 3:47. They were followed closely behind by the alumni team of Mike Sack Jim Lahey (Adult?), Brandon Folio (Did he really graduate?), Matt Glessner, and Thomas Ryba in an impressive 4:01.11. They were followed by UMBC’s third team in 4:16! Closing out the meet for the sprints was the co-ed SMR. The retrievers compiled a smorgasbord of distance runners and second to place second in this “just for funsies” event!
After the dust had settled, the track had cleared, and the steeple pit’s tadpoles reemerged, UMBC was crowned champions on both the men’s and women’s sides! The men were followed by George Mason in second and University of Men’s Distance runners (UMD) in third. On the women’s side, UMD came in second while Towson came in third. It was a very successful year for the dawgs and we’re excited for what’s to come next!
