The Dawgs are ready to start their 2024 season with Capital Relays, taking place at American University on Saturday, February 24, 2024. The weather is looking promising, compared to last year’s meeting with Old Man Winter himself. This meet features a variety of events, including the fan-favorite fun 4x400m relay, where the classic racing baton is replaced by each team with an item of their choice.
For a reminder of last year, UMBC Running Club’s last appearance at Capital Relays was in 2023 during brutal weather, where the Men’s team placed 7th overall with 20 points. This featured two first-place performances by Fred Iheanacho in the 100m Dash and the 200m Dash.
Last year, our women’s team was pretty much nonexistent. This season we have some returners and some newbies, all participating in the 4x400m. One of the returnees, Jade Wilkinson came from far away lands (we thought she was lost at sea) to participate in our 4x400m and the 5k. Last semester Jade had many amazing performances in the XC 6k, so let’s see what happens in the 5k and 400m. Our two newbies are both fishies. Coming from the varsity swim team is Sophie Scroggins who usually does the fly and free. On the other hand, Sydney Hofstetter is more of a fish with legs. She swims a lot now, but also did running in high school. Perhaps the gills will give them an advantage on land. This meet, Sophie is racing the 400m, and Sydney is racing the 1600m. Junior, Sarah Ruotolo took up the mantle of Women’s team captain after we lost Jade. Sarah was born with a 30lb dumbbell in hand, so maybe all that lifting will carry the 4x4oom.
This season, the Men’s team is coming in strong with a promising spread of talents and performances ahead. The Men’s team has gained more coverage across track events in both sprints and distance. Senior Bradley Hoffman, The Prime Night Master, is making his appearance in the 1600m run and the 4x400m relay. Prime night steak, potatoes, and green beans give superhuman abilities which sets him apart from the regular normie. Brad is not the only one with superhuman abilities, as John Melles has gorilla-like strength and a muscular physique. Once this guy gets on the track, destruction lies in his wake. It’s hard to compete with John’s sheer power in the 1600m and 4x400m. Although these two are superhuman, let’s not forget about Senior, Ditzy Dylan Horkan, the President of the UMBC Running Club, who is making his appearance in the 1600m run and the 4x400m relay. Between the wild stories and the accolades, Dylan is always a formidable competitor.
Freshman William Fountain, Ice Cream Whisperer Chris Keely, and Men’s Team Rizz Captain Nathan Khulmann are set for a long awaited match in the 800m. This is William’s first race for the club, coming off a knee injury. Will he succeed against the two other formidable opponents, or will he step on a crack and break his mom’s back? It might be difficult, as Nathan and Chris are the running club’s two biggest pookie bears.
Along with William Fountaine, we have 2 other Freshies. Freshman Alex Nave, the team’s Ross Lynch, is a star-studded athlete who is set to run the 1600m and 800m run for the first time as a collegiate athlete. Last semester we got to see him in a 1600m time trial during sub 20 degree weather and high winds, and only came a few seconds short of sub 5. Will he be able to make it in slightly better weather? Freshman Ivan Trejo is making a track debut in the 1600m run, the 800m run, and the 4x400m relay. He is a familiar face, competing in XC regionals and grabbing first place from Dylan in the Turkey Trot 3k. We will be seeing a rematch in the 1600m. Another new face to the college racing scene is Junior Ryann Johnson, (AKA Petty RJ) who is set to make his college debut with the Running Club as a sprinter in the 400m dash and the 4x400m relay events. After many trials and setbacks year after year, Ryann is making his glorious comeback. We are all excited to see what this guy can pull off.
Filling out the roster are two more reliably quick dudes. Sophomore Lee Lowe is set for an entertaining race in the 800m run and the 4x400m relay. Lee always pulls up to every race he can, being consistently speedy. He’s tall, and covers miles with every step. A race with Lee is never a race that should be missed. Sophomore Adithya Iyer is not seen often in a track race, but is no greenhorn to the racing scene. Last semester, he had a stunning performance in the JFK 50 miler. That’s a lot of miles, but the 1600m is a different story.
Look out for the race results and recap after the meet!
