Meet Recap
On a cold Sunday morning, the UMBC Running Club finished off their spring break taking on the world at the Club Penn Relays. This may be the club's last meet for the season so they wanted to end things on a high note.
The box ended up being the club's main obstacle of the day. Brandon arrived late as his worst nightmare came true: he slept in on race day; he was the first to carry the box. By the end of the day, the box had taken a beating to every retriever, and certainly contributed to the day's shortcomings.
The first race of the day was the Swedish Relays (100m, 200m, 300m, 400m) featuring Keith Ferguson (Fr.), Alex Hulbert (Fr.), Drew Bowling (Jr.), and Brandon Folio (Jr.). The club was seeded first along with one other team so a battle looked to be shaping up. Keith was the most serious of them all, making sure to carry out all of his pre-race rituals before his 100m leg. Unfortunately, he misgauged the timing of his "turning around" ritual and was forced to cut it short on "set." Nonetheless Ferguson ran a solid first leg with a rough 13.5. Hulbert took the baton and stormed down the backstretch making up insane ground on the leaders. Sadly, his broken spine decided to start acting up and he faded along with the feeling in the lower half of his body. Alex still managed a solid 26 mid 200m leg. Bowling took the baton and had a fairly uneventful 300m leg but was still able to split under 42. Unfortunately the effort was too much for his foot as he was limping after the race. Folio had some ground to make up but was unable to do so over the first 300m. A UMD runner was fading hard by the end but he wasn't able to close... Folio split 55 mid and continued at that pace for another 30m because he still doesn't know what a finish line looks like. The final time of 2:17.1 and was good for 4th and a new club record!
The next race was the Sprint Medley Relay (200m, 200m, 400m, 800m) and featured the same relay team as the Swedish relay except with Tanny ser (Jr.) in place of Hulbert. The retrievers seeded 1st (besides that one club that thought they were olympians). Keith ran a mediocre 200m in a tad under 29. Tanny was able to keep the pace and ran around 29 flat as well. Bowling had some ground to make up, but his 57 mid 400m was good to get the team into 2nd. The battle looked to be for 2nd as UMD was a good 100m ahead. Folio took it out conservatively knowing he had to secure 2nd. What seemed to be a smart strategy ended up backfiring as the gap shrunk to 30m by the end of Folio's 2:12 800m leg. The final time of 4:07 was good for 2nd and a new club record!
The next race was the 4x100m relay and featured the same team as the Swedish relay except with Ser in place of Bowling, who was sitting out to rest his demolished foot. Keith took the start once again and powered through to a 14 low opening leg. Hulbert looked to be 95% back as he split a 12.7 despite only running 80m. Tanny was able to just barely dip under 14 for his well over 100m leg, and Folio looks like he's been wasting his time being a distance runner as he split 11.9 for the final leg. The final time of 52.96 was just short of being a club record.
The final event of the day, the 4x400m relay featured the same team as the SMR. With what appeared to be a spontaneous start of the race, the club was forced to be race-ready in 30 seconds once they realized. Consequently, Drew hurt his other foot in perfect Matt Glessner style. Folio was the first leg and was placed next to UMD who used a foam roller in place of their baton. Someone got fired for that. Soon the race was underway and it appeared to be a rare tactical 400m with the leaders coming through 200m in 28 mid, quickly the race spread out as Folio and another runner threw in a brave surge for home. Folio split 55 low and handed off to Tanny. What appeared to be a breakout race quickly deteriorated as the field quickly ate him up after 200m. He finished in 67 high. "Ugh," said Tanny, disappointed in his leg. Keith was next up and looked to be flat out for the first 300m, fading to 6th. From deep in his heart, Keith knew that this race meant the world to him, so he pulled out a nasty kick and finished in 66 flat. Drew had work to do and it was unclear how he'd do after injuries in both his feet. However, Drew was able to absolutely demolish the first 200m and get the team nearly in the top 3 by the finish. Drew finished in a truly amazing 54 flat. Unfortunately the effort was too much for his ear as he lost hearing in it after the race. The final time of 4:03 was good for 5th.
The club celebrated their performances at Fudruckers after the meet. Despite feeling nauseous, a broken ear, and 2 obliterated feet, Drew was able to woof down a delicious 1/3 pounder for his recovery. This meet may be the last meet of the season, so join us this upcoming fall where the retrievers will be hungrier than ever to kill it cross country!
