Meet Preview
On Saturday, the retrievers conclude their whirlwind season that consisted of only the month of October at UVA’s Cavalier Invitational. After a certain basketball game last year, there seems to be some bad blood from the UVA side with them politely asking us to “never show our faces at their school”. This, however, won’t deter our squad as 8 women and 7 men plan to make the journey. That’s right, folks! The women’s team outnumbers the men for what might be the first time in club history!
Leading off for our elite 8 is none other than Anna Staats (So.) who after winning the Monster Dash is looking to bring home the bacon for the dogs. Also ready to show up and show out for the retrievers is Jordan McDougall (Fr.), who has been crushing d-hall omelets all week in preparation for this meet. She’s gonna have some competition keeping her second-place spot, though, as we’ve got not one but two Corns making the trek to UVA. That’s right, both Julia Corns (So.) and Naomi Corns (So.) will be making appearances. Rumor has it Julia meant to sign up for the past two meets but missed registration, so she’ll be looking to start and end her season on a high note. It won’t be easy, though, as Naomi had a strong showing at Princeton earlier this year even though she was sick. She’s healthy now and ready to dominate! Also coming back from a hiatus for the dawgs is none other than Elizabeth Blake (Jr.) who ran what she called the “hardest race of her life” at the Monster Dash earlier this week. It’s okay, running up hilltop should prepare her well for the supposed hilly course. Not to be overlooked as a dark horse for scoring is Alanah Follis (Fr.), who has been steadily improving all season. With her dinosaur socks and winning attitude, she’s bound to have a good race. Another runner looking to make the jump to scoring positions and to no longer being a freshman is Kate Miller (Fr.). She spent all night Saturday studying with some nerds, so maybe she’ll hit both goals this race! Rounding out for the retrievers in her last cross-country race for the dawgs is Katelyn Gregory (Sr.). I mean we aren’t really sure this is her last meet but we’ll hype it like it is anyway!
On the men’s side, Thing #1 Isaac Montgomery (So.) hopes to pull the upset and get the race he’s been working for all season. After crushing and workout on Wednesday at 9 PM after crushing his Orgo Exam, we’re excited to see what he can do. But it won’t be easy. He’ll have to get through Will Staab (Fr.), who has been running PR’s all season. He skipped the Monster Dash though, which means his legs will be fresh but also means he’s pretty lame. Also skipping the Monster Dash was none other than Tomas Aker (So.). He’s one of the few guys to make it to all the meets so the competitive energy is flowing. Another guy that would h8 to end their perfect attendance trend is none other than Alex Hulbert (Jr.). After a rough race last week at regionals, Alex is looking to tear it up at this meet. Al Hernandez (Fr.) didn’t race last week, but had an incredible race back at Princeton. He’s been laying low since then, which can only mean he’s hungry and ready to race. Justin Drew (Jr.) also returns after a weeklong hiatus after destroying Princeton’s course. He’s a bit of a silent but deadly kinda guy and we can’t wait to see him shine in his last race of the season. Rounding out our stupendous seven is Matt Lyan (Fr.). After a rocky race last weekend, Matt is looking to show what he’s capable of and hopefully get that last scoring spot for the dawgs.
With the cooler temps rolling in and rumors of a short course it’s sure to be a fast day for the dogs in their last meet of the season! Let’s go dawgs!!

The Race
Meet Recap
On Saturday, the UMBC Men’s Basketball team opened their season against their fabled opponents from last season: The University of Virginia. With a fresh squad with a lot of new faces, the retrievers hoped they could keep up with the Cavaliers and most importantly score the most points. After some recent rains the night before it was obvious the court would be damp, which the dogs could only use to their advantage.
The leading scorer for the retrievers was none other than Katelyn Gregory (#10), who after taking Jarius Lyles’ number from last season also store his insane ability to score threes. She was all over the court and came home with 37:45 of playing time and a whopping 147 points. The second highest scorer on the day for the retrievers was none other than Kate Miller (#23). She was out to serve up some assists and some justice. With 34:02 of playing time and 140 points Miller was an essential part of the team this game. Next up for the retrievers was none other than Elizabeth Blake (#21), who truly embodied the spirit of Sam Schweitz except for the whole being-six-foot-nine part. Blake put up 113 points during the game and had a fantastic 32:07 of playing time. Also coming in red hot for the retrievers was Alanah Follis (#22). She managed 31:44 of playing time and 109 points which really rocked our crocs off. Also having a great game was Jordan McDougall (#13). As Will’s personal alarm clock, Jordan’s had plenty of suicides from the stop sign to Susquehanna to prepare her for this game. And it’s payed off. McDougall had 29:41 of playing time and put up an impressive 86 points. Next up from the bench for the retrievers was the dynamic duo of Julia Corns (#15) and Naomi Corns (#19). The twins were as inseparable this game as a shark attack victim and a lifeguard. Naomi put up the most points with 45 and 27:26 of playing time while Julia was just behind with 44 points and an identical playing time. They scored some crucial baskets that really lead to the retriever’s success. Rounding out our starting lineup was Anna Staats (#16), who didn’t shoot her shot this game. With only 25:06 of playing time and 8 points scored, Anna will really have to step it up if she wants to compete on the national stage. The retrievers were able to come from behind this game and pull the upset against UVA with a score of 216 to 67.
In the other game of this doubleheader, the dogs were led by none other than Justin Drew (#4) who had an incredible last few minutes and earned this week’s kick of the week honors. He was also the top scorer for the retrievers putting up a massive 160 points and 36:49 of playing time. Also having a great game for the retrievers was Alex Hulburt (#8), who gave a big smile and thumbs up mid game. Guess the legs were just feelin’ good. After passing to Justin after the first six or so minutes, Hulburt knew it was time to get his head in the game. He ended up with 35:59 of playing time and an impressive 154 points. Freshman phenom Matthew Lyan (#2) was next to come up from the bench for the dogs. He might be quiet, but he really lets his game do the talking. After 33:36 of playing time and 120 points Lyan really showed what he was made of. Another player with an impressive final surge near the end of the game was Al Hernandez (#7) who threw down a three pointer in the final minutes that would eventually lead to the dog’s victory. Hernandez managed 121 points and 33:37 of playing time, a solid performance during a tough game. Not to be forgotten is Isaac Montgomery (#1) who played for the name on his back and showed that the number on his chest was only a little off of his final standing. Although he looked weak mid-game, Montgomery was able to push through and get 32:25 of playing time with 96 points. Another freshman phenom that made his appearance known Saturday was Will $taab (#18). After what we can only imagine was a wild Friday night filled with studying for midterms, $taab kept up his perfect streak of almost missing the van. We’re glad he made it though as $taab was able to put up 81 points in an impressive 31:46 of playing. Our top defender this game was none other than Tomas Aker (#11), who took K.J. Maura’s number to heart and Maura’s speed to his legs. He absolutely flew around the court and had a phenomenal 77 rebounds in 31:36 of playing. Tomas also had some competition from our very own Mitchell Welter (#20), who was a late addition to the team. Since he missed every practice this semester, Welter fumbled a little and only managed 28 rebounds in 29:45 of playing time. Despite this, the dogs were able to put up a whopping 272 points against UVA’s 37.
Although this game was the start of the basketball team’s season, it also marked the end of the season for the retrievers that run cross country. This can only mean one thing: it’s 400 time.
