Meet Preview
Its the big one! The last one! The final test of strength, speed, and endurance this cross country season! Ladies and Gentlemen the UMBC Running Club is going to Nationals this weekend! Did we qualify? actually? no. But we did in our hearts and that’s all that matters.
Starting off in the early morning it’s the race of the super seniors! Bella Faccine (Sr.), Kate Miller (Sr.), and Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) will be competing in their very last college cross country. Nobody really knows how long any of these women have been in college, but if they can endure college as long as they have, this race should be a piece of cake for them. Who will be top dawg in this final race? Bella has been training hard this season and could take it all in her final race. Meanwhile, Kate plans to run this race on the power of pure rage and ibuprofen. Who knows, maybe Katelyn was waiting her entire college career to officially take the title of Lowest Scorer.
Representing for the upperclassmen men’s race, Isaac Montgomery (Jr.) is expected to take it all as his biggest competition will be in a different race. That is unless Dawit Tegegn (Grad?) has gotten back in shape and will take the spot of top dawg. Unless he conveniently has car issues again (we’re watching you Isaac). Brian Hung (Jr.) and Alex Hulburt (Sr.) have plans to pack it and jog for this Nationals race, in hopes they don’t break themselves. We are taking bets now as to what mile Brian will kick it in and speed up, while Alex angrily speeds up behind him. Also taking bets for whose hamstring/IT band snaps first. Sam Clemens (Sr.) is coming back to defend his title as “faster than the jogging JMU pack.” Finishing up for the men, Michael Wellen (Sr.) will be finishing his running club cross country career with a bang.
Leading off for the underclassmen, Josh Sanchez (Fr.) is looking to tie up his incredible first season with a bow and one more PR. Coming back hot to finish his season, Al Hernandez (So.) has been getting in some fast workouts lately and is climbing back on top where he belongs. Harry Trinh (So.) is looking to finish his season with a solid race or use this last race to figure out how he can study during a race. We believe in you Harry. Zach Starr the Track Star (Fr.) is going to have the best race in the entire meet and the biggest PR. No pressure though.
This is the last cross country race for many of these Retrievers so amongst the blood, sweat, and tears... expect a lot of tears.

The Race
Meet Recap
After a cold weekend, the UMBC Running Club has officially capped off their cross country season with NIRCA Nationals. They started out the day with unique team bonding experiences such as screaming when someone almost ran a red light and saving money on a tent by huddling like penguins under a blanket. It was questionable if a good amount of the team would even finish due to a contagious condition of having glass bones and paper skin, but miraculously everyone prevailed and it was all in all a solid day of races.
The first race of the day was the upperclassmen women’s 6k. The weather was absolutely abysmal but somehow these women prevailed. Bella Facchine (Sr.) made her final mark of her UMBC Running Club cross country career by shooting out the gate. She came through as top dawg, in 28:27 while waking up her speed twitch muscles and beating out her competitors at the very last second in her final kick. Miraculously finishing next was Kate Miller (Sr.), who couldn’t even finish half a mile a week ago, coming in at 31:06. Nice to know it took two weeks of no running and being crippled to get a time close to last year. She felt that finish for the rest of the weekend though. Officially, OFFICIALLY losing her title as Highest Scorer in NIRCA, Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) beat three other people this race in a time of 33:46.
The next race of the day were the upperclassmen men’s 8k. The weather did not get any warmer in that first hour. Coming out as top dawg for this race was Isaac Montgomery (Jr.), who is allergic to the cold, finishing in 30:19. Behind him, with a fantastic race, was Christopher Blaisdell (Jr.) coming across the finish in 30:46, thanks to that extra boost from Dunkin' that morning. Coming back after breaking himself at Regionals, Brian Hung (Jr.) decided to break himself one more time this cross country season. He came through the finish at a time of 33:38, which was heavily influenced by Sam Clemens (Sr.) who had a fantastic race, dropping over 3 minutes from two weeks ago in a time of 33:47. Alex Hulburt (Sr.) spends most of his energy in the first quarter mile of the race singing Country Roads, maybe he does this to distract himself from the pain of his hamstring. He finished in a time of 34:40. Finishing off for the upperclassmen was Michael Wellen (Sr.) who had a solid race and PR of 38:49!
The final race of the day, 4. hours. later…. featured everyone’s two favorite underclassmen who showed up to Nationals. Taking the lead, Josh Sanchez (Fr.) had a great looking race and came through the finish at 29:48, giving him the best race of the meet! And he’s just a freshman! We’re excited to see what he’ll bring these next coming years. Following, Harry Trinh (So.) was heeled in the first few meters of the race and ran 5 miles with the heel of his shoe indented in. He still ran and finished like a champion though in a time of 33:36. We are launching a full investigation as to who did this so they can apologize to Harry in person.
All in all a solid day to end the season! 400 training starts next week so wake up those fast twitch muscles.
