Meet Preview
Tomorrow The UMBC Running Club will travel to Shippensburg PA. to compete in the Paul Kaiser Classic. This is the final meet of the season for our athletes so they will be giving it nothing short of their all.
The 10000m features Brandon Folio (Sr.) and Anna Staats (Fr.) who will be making an attempt at claiming the school records. Folio will be chasing after Matt Glessner's elusive 36:41 from 3 years ago. Staats will just be grateful to not run the steeplechase this week.
The women’s 5000m headlines Nicole Dawson (Gr.) who after being dodged by Staats last week will be returning her the favor. Can she lower her club record even more? Stay tuned to find out.
The men’s 400m stars Drew Bowling (Sr.) who will be making one final shot at a 400m PR in his collegiate career. But not to be forgotten is Not Trent Foster (So.) who if he continues his rate of improvement will be in the 51s after tomorrow. Woah folks... whoa. Alex Hulburt (So.) will be making his return to the 400m after a period of absence. Rumor has it, he’s just using this race as a warm up for the 4x400m later in the night.
The men’s 200m spotlights Cole Bowden (Fr.) who will be making a final bid at a PR. He just needs to run a tongue’s-length faster than last week. Alex Hulburt (So.) will also be in the race to maybe ruin Cole’s hopes and dreams.
The men’s 800m features Tomas Aker (So.) who will be looking to improve upon his incredible race last week. Can he be the first club retriever to break the 2:00 barrier? Keep clicking that refresh button until you find out.
The women’s shot put will feature Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) who will be facing stiff competition for the first time in her collegiate career. This will be a true test folks.
Stay tuned for photos, videos, and a recap after the race. We encourage all family and friends to come out and see our athletes' final race of the season! Lets go dawgs!

The Meet
Meet Recap
On Saturday, the UMBC Running Club travelled to Shippensburg, PA to compete in the Paul Kaiser Classic. The meet featured incredible competition from some of the best D2 schools but the Retrievers proved that they could hang with the elite.
Anna Staats (Fr.) headlined the women’s 10k in the midst of a 10 mile day and placed 10th in 44:36.99. Rumor has it this is also the 10th shot Anna has missed at running a good race. Brandon Folio (Sr.) appeared in his first track 10k of his life, but also the last track race of his collegiate career. Folio took a gutsy shot and Matt Glessner's elusive 36:41 club record... but it was simply too much. Two 5:51s and the sun was all it took to suck Folio dry of his energy. However, his performance was still incredible enough to grant him a stunning podium finish, placing 6th in 40:09.61.
The 5000m featured Nicole Dawson (Gr.) who took a stab at lowering her club record. Trying to hang on the leaders at sub 19 pace proved to be insurmountable in the heat, but she still held on to a 3rd place finish in 19:55.61. In a moment of pure frustration, Dawson knew the only way she’d feel better is to drink something fruity and then run again. Her run only lasted a lap... but it was the first moment of Dawson’s life where her 400m was more impressive than her 5k.
The race everyone was waiting for... the men’s 400m was a moment that proved that greek mythology is actually real. Walking up to the line, the heart of Drew Bowling (Sr.) was filled with the spirit of metal and irregular QT intervals. The poor Bowling couldn’t get the blues version of Raining Blood out of his head and Zeus sensed evil. Zeus sent lightning bolts through the sky with the hopes a 30 minute delay would squander Bowling’s attempt at a new 400m club record. However, you can’t kill the metal. Bowling crushed his 400m in the windy downpour placing 21st out of 45 in 53.05. For reference, last years 21st place finisher ran 52.02 and less athletes ran it. Keeping the incredible performances rolling, Trent Foster (So.) won his heat with his signature last 100m placing 28th overall in 54.93. Making an attempt at becoming the 3rd Retriever this season to Van Niekerk the 400m, Alex “GigglyElectedSteadyHandsTeamCaptain” Hulburt (So.) blazed the first 200m and then faded to a still-impressive 31st place finish in 55.92.
The men’s 800m ended up equally as exciting with Tomas Aker (So.) and late entry Thomas “Ryva” Ryba (Sr.) representing the Retrievers. Coming through in 58 point, it looked like sub 2 was still in the cards for Aker. With 150m to go, Aker pulled an “almost Uceny” stumbling and nearly stopping after getting boxed in from lane 3. Aker stayed strong and was still able to come away with a 2:02.41 placing 41st out of 81 athletes. Despite the strong performance, we still think Aker should stick to EDM. Ryba ran a nearly perfect race splitting 64/66 for a 2:10.88 and 72nd place finish. A rough start cost him the sub-2:10 but it didn’t cost him the 4x4 victory.
The men’s 200m spotlighted Cole Bowden (Fr.) who concluded his season with another sub-25 placing 53rd in 24.91. We caught up with Cole after the race asking what his thoughts were coming to the meet and not PRing. “I didn’t come here to PR” said the delighted Cole. “I came here to beat Alex... that’s it. Got the job done today and couldn’t be happier.” Finishing behind Cole was Alex Hulburt (So.) who placed 57th in 25.21.
The women’s shot-put featured Katelyn Gregory (Jr.) who showed her dedication to the club by arriving 8 hours early to her event. While slightly off her PR, Gregory still came away with a solid 25’10” throw.
We’d like to thank all the athletes who made this an outstanding 2018 track and field season. I would like to wish everyone a farewell as this will be my last meet recap. I would like to take this minute to brag a little that I was able to write all these recaps without anyone ever figuring out who I am. Regardless, we will be back in the fall for what will undoubtably be one of the most exciting cross country seasons in running club history. As always... great job dawgs!!
