The Race
Meet Recap
This past Saturday, the UMBC Running Club traveled to Fairfax, VA to compete in their first track race of the season at GMU. After a long break from competition, the athletes were excited to gauge their current fitness.
Our VP, Drew Bowling (Jr.) debuted in the 10000m after many months of preparation. Unfortunately, he forgot to do any distance runs, and instead stuck to a strict schedule of 400m repeats. After looking strong over the first lap, he soon realized his fate and dropped out 2 miles later. We spoke to Bowling after the race and he seemed in good spirits... "It's too many miles," he affirmed, "It ain't happening."
Next on the track was the 4x800m relay, where Ethan Allnutt (Sr.), Alex Hulbert (Fr.), Drew Bowling, and Brandon Folio (Jr.) had their eyes on setting the club record. Allnutt took it out strong splitting a blistering 2:08.7 and putting a huge gap on the field. Hulbert kept up the momentum splitting 2:18.8. Bowling took the baton and immediately felt the failed 10k in his legs, splitting 2:24.1. With one leg to go, the gap was almost 100m to 2nd place. Folio closed the race off with a conservative 2:23.4. The final time of 9:15.0 was good for a club record!
In the men's 100m, Alex Hulbert and Justin Drew (Fr.) both had their eyes set on setting the club record. The 4-man race was tight but Hulbert just edged Drew at the line to place 2nd and 3rd in 12.40 and 12.46 respectively. The time was good for a club record!
The men's 1600m featured Brandon Folio and Mike Sack (Jr.). The pace was hot coming through 400m in 69 seconds. By 600m, both Sack and Folio were off the leaders. In the end, Folio was able to hold on to 3rd in 4:57 and Sack was 7th in 5:41.
The men's 4x100m relay featured Justin Drew, Drew Bowling, Alex Hulbert, and Mike Sack. The competition was against the clock with UMBC being the only team entered. Justin took it out strong but the handoff to Bowling was far from smooth. With his DNF in the 10k and leg in the 4x800, his acceleration was shot and didn't break 15s, but at least he didn't do it heal-toe. Hulbert regained the momentum flying around the turn and Sack surprised with a lightning fast anchor. This begs the question... what's he doing running marathons? The final time of 52.59 was good for a club record!
The race of the week was the men's 400m where Ethan Allnutt held off a charging ECU runner over the final 200m to win and set a new club record of 54.25 (The old record was 54.36 by Jose Cruz). Alex and Justin were also in the field and placed 3rd and 4th with a 59.67 and 61.57 respectively.
The men's 200m featured exclusively UMBC runners, Justin Drew, Mike Sack, and Brandon Folio. After a sub par 1600, Folio was able to pull off the win in 25.38 with Sack and Drew close behind in 26.39 and 26.93 respectively.
The men's 800m featured another stellar performance from Ethan Allnutt who held it together the last 300m after the monkey had fully jumped on his back to win the race in 2:15.8.
The 3200m featured Emily Merritt (Jr.) and Brandon Folio. After a rare false start, the race was under way. Folio was suffering trying to hang onto the leaders coming through the mile in 5:25 and was clearly on his way to a DNF. Fortunately he was able to keep grinding away, with each passing lap showing a clearer "Vince" impression. He hung onto 3rd place and finished in 10:57. Meanwhile, Merritt was holding a steady pace with her goal being a club record. In the end she got it with ease in a time of 15:14!
The last race of the day, the 4x400m relay, was probably the most exciting. Ethan Allnutt took it out in 56.45 giving the club a slight lead over ECU. Justin Drew took the baton and battled with an ECU runner the entire time splitting 61.37. Alex Hulbert then took it out hard and held a slight lead over an ECU runner who somehow negative split the race. Hulbert finished in 59.19. At this point we all held our breath wondering if Drew Bowling's legs would hold up after a leg in both the 4x100 and 4x800 and 38% of a 10k. What was worry soon become relief as Bowling utterly obliterated ECU with a 56.69. The final time of 3:53.7 was good for a new club record!
This was the first win of the year for the club, scoring an overall 99 points! Afterwards the club celebrated their victory at IHOP before their journey home. Join us next Sunday for our first home meet in club history!
