Meet Preview
After a ruff first race at Penn State and three more weeks of training, the Retrievers are off this weekend to take on another cross country race at the Princeton Invitational. Will this weekend be full of PR’s like it was last year? It better be, or Brian might kill us all. Princeton is back on their regular course this year, so things should be interesting to say the least.
Leading off on the women’s side is Anna Staats (Sr.). After smashing her own 10 miler record this past weekend, she’s shown she’s not finished breaking club records and is looking to bring that energy this weekend. Coming in hot after a couple solid first races at Penn State are the Corn Dawgs Naomi Corns (Jr.) and Julia Corns (Jr.) looking to tear up the field and take out the competition with their chronic adorableness. Debuting in her very first NIRCA race is Pam Koga (Sr.) who ran an amazing 5k time trial with only one week of training, so we’re excited to see what she’ll be able to do this weekend. Following is Kate Miller (Sr.); she did two 3 mile repeats in a row last week faster than her 5k time trial, so hopefully she can buck up and actually run fast this race. Rounding out for the women’s team is Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) who is hoping to use the motivation of Panera Bagels at the finish line to drive her through a PR. All in all a very solid women’s team, and we’re very excited to get a glimpse at what they can do before Regionals.
On the men’s side, back in the saddle we have front runners Dawit Tegegn (Sr.) and Brian Hung (Jr.). Both have denied the possibility of being top dawg this week. We know they’re just being humble (although Brian’s knee might actually explode), but they might get beat out by Isaac Montgomery (Jr.) who has been logging solid workout after solid workout on Strava and is ready to take his victory for once and for all. If he doesn’t get it this week, there’s a very real chance Isaac will resolve to stabbing people. Not far behind , underclassmen Josh Sanchez (Fr.) and Harry Trinh (So.) have both been exceeding expectations every race and workout. We’re excited to see how well they’ll do on the Princeton course and get a real feel for how fast these two can go. Looking to run a sub 32 race this weekend, angry runner Alex Hulburt (Sr.) might also stab someone during his race. He’s been known to throw elbows so both the competition and his teammates should watch out for that. Especially his running partner, Ryan Kane (Jr.) who is coming back from two weeks of sickness and exams and has stated “Princeton is about to be a slow jog”. Up next, go getter Chris Blaisdell (Jr.) settled for just one race this weekend and is ready to give it his all. Back and ready to show up everyone, Al Hernandez (So.) is ready to jumpstart his racing career and claw his way back up to the top where he belongs. Last, but most certainly, definitely not the least, Zach Starr the Track Star (Fr.) will be debuting his running club career this weekend. We’re all excited to see how he does and we’re sure it’ll be one of the highlights of the weekend. Even better than Hoagie Haven. The real champion of the meet is Trent Foster (Sr.) who is not running but has graciously offered his driving services and positive charm that'll probably be enough to help everyone PR this weekend.
The weather is looking perfect and the course is looking flat so everyone should be sure to have a great ego boost right before Regionals. Lets SCO DAWGS!!

The Race
Meet Recap
When it rains it pours, but we’re retrievers not tigers. This past weekend the UMBC Running Club ventured to Princeton, New Jersey for their annual Hoagie Haven trip. Before they went to Hoagie Haven however, they thought they should compete in the Princeton Invitational since they were in the neighborhood anyway.
First to come speeding through the finish line was Anna Staats (Sr.) breaking her 7th place streak by coming in a whopping 3rd place with an incredible finish in 24:17, smoking the 4th placer at the last minute. Next up with an incredible finish was Pamantha Koga (Sr.) coming in 21st in a time of 25:44. Pam later stated her time was just okay and she hasn’t done a 6k in a while. Ok Pam. Following through were Naomi Corns (Jr.) and Julia Corns (Jr.) who decided to make it their life mission to make it as hard as possible to tell them apart by running the exact same pace the entire race, side by side. They both finished in 41st and 42nd place at the exact same time of 27:25. This was obviously a test to see if they could confuse and break the timer. Limping behind was Kate Miller (Sr.) who doesn’t want to talk about it. Closing out was Katelyn Gregory (Sr.) in 63rd at a time of 35:45, who sprinted past the finish line and to the bagel tent because that’s where the real finish line was. The women placed 5th out of ten teams overall! We’re excited to see what they have in store this weekend at Regionals!
On the men’s side, the day we have all been waiting for has come. Isaac Montgomery (Jr.) came in as top dawg in 30:04 placing 76th overall. Rumor has it being able to sit in the front seat and listen to Panic! At the Disco gave Isaac the high hopes to be victorious. Just as amazing, only two seconds behind Isaac was Joshua Sanchez (Fr.) who got to stretch his legs for 3 hours by manspreading the entire car ride and came sprinting through at 30:06 in 77th place. Next up, splashing through the rain, Harry Trinh (So.) has an interesting strategy of saving all his energy by never saying a word and then dispersing it throughout his race, finishing in a time of 31:29, placing 86th. Following up, Dawit Tegegn (Sr.) graced us with his godly presence and jogged an easy 32:15. Dawit is obviously saving his energy for Regionals this Saturday. Not far behind, Alex Hulburt (Sr.) who came in at 32:52 placing 93rd overall. Alex was later heard saying the rain was really cramping his style. Not far behind was Alvaro “the comeback kid” Hernandez (So.) who is getting faster and faster every week, coming in hot this week at 33:23. Right behind Al was everyone’s favorite freshman named Zach, Zach Starr (Fr.) who had an absolutely incredible race PRing both at the 5k and the 8k in 33:42. Finishing up for the Retrievers was Ryan Kane (Jr.) keeping his promise of light jogging the course and finishing up in 34:48.
All in all a solid race for the dawgs and good glimpse into what to expect this weekend at Regionals.
