Meet Recap
This past Sunday, the UMBC Running Club hosted their first track meet in club history! Even though racing took a back seat to running the meet (no pun intended), we saw several club records fall and many outstanding performances.
The first race day, the men's 4x800m relay featured Ethan Allnutt (Sr.), Brandon Folio (Jr.), Drew Bowling (Jr.), and Alex Hulbert (Fr.). Allnutt lead off and through down harsh surge from 200m to 500m to take the lead over UMD. It soon came back to haunt him when the monkey jumped on his back at with 150m left. He was still able to come away with 2:09.9. Folio took the baton in 2nd and immediately surged past UMD. At 650m, the monkey was waiting for his 2nd attack. Despite coming through 600m in 1:31, the monkey took a beating to Folio resulting in a 2:06.6. Bowling took the baton with a substantial lead and decided to go for a nice jog. The monkey felt bad for Drew and decided to not jump on his back. Bowling finished in 2:17.1. With the lead only at 4 seconds, Alex had to go for it, despite feeling like garbage. Unfortunately the anchor for UD was about to throw down a 2:04 so Hulbert's fate was inevitable. Hulbert closed in 2:18.9 and the team finished 2nd in a new school record of 8:52.1!
Next up the women's 4x800m relay featured Anna Ciattei (So.), Christina Saba, Katelyn Gregory (So.), and Julia Ciattei (So.). Unfortunately UMD brought their A team and the race was over almost instantly but the girls were still able to come away with a new club record of 12:59.3! Anna fought hard for a 2:53.6, Christina got the baton in no-woman's-land but was still able to run a 3:27.5, Katelyn took it easy with a 3:47.3 (saving it for the shot put), and Julia finished in a blistering 2:50.9.
The men's 100m featured Alex Hulbert and Justin Drew (Fr.) in the 1st heat. Competing with the incredible start of the Towson sprinter, Hulbert and Drew were able to slightly close on him after 50m. Hulbert finished 2nd in 12.40 and Drew 3rd in 12.83.
The men's 200m featured none other than Jusin Drew who came back from only a 20 minute break after the 100m to run a 25.85, which is knocking on the door of the club record. More impressively he nearly closed the gap on the two Towson runners over the final 50m.
Coming back from a season's best in the 800m, Brandon Folio was entered in the super competitive fast heat of the men's 1500m. Coming through 400m in 68, it was clear Folio was moving backwards. By 500m he was off the back of the pack and had to hold on for the rest of the race to finish in a mediocre 4:31.2.
The women's 1500m featured Julia Ciattei and Katelyn Gregory coming back from the 4x8. From the beginning they worked together to push each other to a fast time. It worked as Katelyn finished in a club record time of 7:15.0! Julia finished close behind in 7:15.3
The men's 400m featured Justin Drew, Ramses Long, and David Llanso. In the first heat, Ramses competed in his first track race of his collegiate career and didn't disappoint with a 59.53. Justin competed in his 3rd race of the day and was able to come away with a solid PR of 58.42. Last but not least, in what's been rumored to be his first track race in his life, David was able to come away with solid 65.60 .
Next up was the men's 4x100m relay which once again featured Justin Drew as well as Ethan Allnutt, Mike Sack, and Alex Hulbert. Hand-offs ended up being the team's demise as 2 botched handoffs cost likely 2 seconds. They were able to come away with a 53.31.
The men's 5000m featured Dawit Tegnegn and Alexis Rodriguez Morfin. Feeling ambitious, Dawit took it out at 15:37 pace. Was he back? He held onto the lead pack until 600m where he started his long run for home. Meanwhile Alexis was biding his time, catching Dawit slowly but surely making up around 1 second per lap. Over the last 100m Alexis through down one of the greatest kicks of his career nearly closing in on Dawit. Alexis smashed his PR with a 19:26.7. Dawit held on for a 19:21.1
The men's 4x400m relay was another exciting one and featured Ethan Allnutt, Alex Hulbert, Justin Drew, and Drew Bowling. Ethan took it out hard with a 55 flat. After competing in 4 events, Justin took the 2nd leg and was able to just sneak under 60 with a 59.9. Alex was 3rd and brought the team back from 2nd to last, to 3rd with a seasons best 56.9. Finally, Drew once again found life in his legs and demolished the field running the fastest split with a 55.7. In the end the team broke their club record from last week with a 3:47.5!
The long jump featured Jason Winkler, Mike Sack, and Keith Ferguson. Jason, who I didn't even know was part of the club until this meet, placed 3rd with a club record 16'8''! Sack also jumped well with a 16'4''. It's unclear whether Keith made it into the pit but the results have him at 12'0'', a personal best.
The men's shot put featured Mike Sack, Alexis Rodriguez-Morfin, Sam Clemens, and Keith Ferguson. Mike placed 1st (the only UMBC male to win an event) with an absolutely astonishing club record of 30'5" which again begs the question, why is he running marathons? The success continued with Alexis placing 2nd with a 24'3" and Sam with a 21'1" placing 3rd, a UMBC sweep. Keith held it together and threw 19'0".
Finally, the women's shot put featured our very own Katelyn Gregory who won the competition with a school record 25'9"!
The club placed 2nd today and had a solid showing. Shout out to Thomas Ryba, Drew Bowling, and everybody who volunteered to put this meet together. It was for the most part a total success! We'll be back in a few weeks where we take on the big boys at the Club Penn Relays...
